Re: help words in arabic
wouldn't veil be hijab? حجاب
not sure how to spell hagallah because i'm not sure of what the correct transliteration is but it might be ةلأل
and assuming melayya is already a word in arabic, it could be ملاية
since these are from an arabic keyboard from the net you can't see the fathas, dammas, and kasras but you get a general idea of it since if this will be in print you woulnd't be able to see the short vowels written out anyway
hope this helps!

Re: help words in arabic
I wouldn't think a dance veil would be hijab, doesn't seem appropriate somehow to take one's hijab off and wave it around. There must be another word for a dance veil specifically?
Be very careful with Melaya because there is a *very* similar word in Arabic for a dirty booty dance style....search youtube for 'malayya' if you want to be shocked!
Sorry I can't be helpful with this, only cautionary! You wouldn't want to accidentally promote yourself as a veiled booty dancer!

Re: help words in arabic
Egyptians never use the term "hijjab" to refer to a belly dance veil. Never!
WE use the term "veil" to refer to this item, but Egyptians do NOT see it as being analogous to any garment they might wear. To them "piece of fabric" would be a more accurate term. I've heard Arabs use the term "shawl" when speaking English to me - for example, they would refer to a veil-sized piece of tulle bi telli (assuit fabric) as a "shawl". I don't know what the Arabic word would be for it, though. Maybe Leyla Lanty can help us out?

Re: help words in arabic
The word 'tarha' is what I have heard used most often for the veil we use to dance with. 'Tarha' refers to a long head covering as well as the fabric dancers use as a prop.

Re: help words in arabic
Thanks everyone for your help.
Yes, veil has to be tarha or something similar since Hijab has to do with religion and not with dance.
About Melayya, i have a doubt
I have found this spelling MIN, AAIN, LAM, ALIF, YA and TA MARBUTA and in your spelling there is no AAIN, so i really dont know which one is the right, since i dont want to make a mistake with the "booty dance"
About Hagallah, Dear Zfejzic, please, could you be so kind to send the spelling again? i just can read, TA MARBUTA, LAM, ALIF, LAM.
Thanks a million.....hugssss

Re: help words in arabic
There is no Ain( ع) in the arabic word
ملاية
The full arabic name for the worn garment is ملاية لف . The veil can also be called a شال-pronounced Shaal.
p.s the spelling you gave (MIN, AAIN, LAM, ALIF, YA and TA MARBUTA )would be
written asمعلاية .
That is not really a word in Arabic. Where did you find it? I hope this information helps. I love language. I rarely get to do this. With my Arabic students we are usually using Arabic academic words. It's fun to do dance related Arabic..g.:
Additional info: Melaya, means a sheet of fabric. Melayet Sereer, means a bed sheet or bed spread. Melaya Laff means a wrapped sheet of fabric. This is a traditional, national costume for women in Egypt. in the 19th and early part of the 20th centuryLast edited by princessisabella; 12-29-2008 at 12:25 PM.
