Re: What sounds do the "3" and "7" stand for
thanks aasiyah :-)
I thought I remembered the 3 from a med list discussion about the quality of dalah and it was often written as dala3.
Do you know if it is pronounced eye-n or more eee-n?
So dala-ein, sounds like EINy from Habibi Ya Einy by any chance?
The 7... is that the strong breathy kind of H?

Hmmm, I'm thinking of the word meaning "I have", which I've seen spelled as 3ndi. Isn't that pronounced AHHHN-dee?

Re: What sounds do the "3" and "7" stand for
No, not that long on the aaaa. 'I have' is spelled ein--nun--dal--ta marbuta. No 'alif' (long a 'a' sound).
The numbers are used because they somewhat resemble the Arabic letters. '3' looks like the letter 'ein', '7' looks like the letter 'Ha'. I have seen '2' used for a diacritic 'hamza', or glottal stop. My friend calls it Arabish!

When you say gagging sound do you mean glottal stop?

Re: What sounds do the "3" and "7" stand for
Ein (ع)is pharyngeal, so not a fully glottal stop. The throat is involved, though.
To me, the 'ein' is not gaggy, or not noisily so...if people reference gagging, I think of the letter 'kha', sometimes transliterated 'x' (خ).
At risk of being gross, and not at all meant disrespectfully to the Arabic language, of which I am enamored, but when I was first learning I thought of خ as the 'hock a loogie' sound. ع for me was more Chewbacca-esque, physically at least.
