Arabic Speakers Out There: Can anyone tell me what this song is about? No need for line by line translation (because this is so last minute), I just want to get the gist of it. Gonna dance to it TONIGHT for my friend's birthday and though I can 'feel' the music, I don't want to dance all happy-like if the lyrics are actually about heartbreak.
Yea, yea - I know some of you might be like 'well if you don't know what it's about don't dance to it blah blah" to which I say go fug yourself. It's a beautiful song and it moves me tons and this party is the perfect casual environment for me to try it out with double veil. I wouldn't do it in a more formal setting.
It's Natacha Atlas's "Ezzay":

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Please accept my apologies if this sounds rude, but if you are going to dance to it tonight regardless of what it is about and your response to people who might question that is to "go fug yourself" then you might get more responses if you give people any positive reason to do this work for you. Saying that you need a translation, but don't care what it is because you are going to dance to it anyway, isn't much incentive for people to help. I don't have a translation of it, but you may want to try googling it. There are often translations available of popular music. Good luck.

Re: Arabic Speakers - Can anyone give me a hint as to what this song is about?
Not rude at all.
I didn't realize that someone who decides to help would consider the opportunity to give me a hard time to be their *incentive* to help. I apologize for the pre emptive defensiveness with my 'go fug yourself' comment. What I meant is I understand why it can be considered disrespectful to dance without knowing what it all means, and in a more formal setting where I know there will be more Arabic speakers, I wouldn't dare do that but I plan on enjoying this song tonight, without the bhuz bellydance police wagging a finger on my brain. I know there are those that will still be stirred by that, and I was getting defensive anticipating that criticism. Sorry.
If you wish to help by all means I would appreciate it. But if you don't want to, that is ok I will live and not complain.
I did Google it to no avail. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered asking. I'll have it translated in the near future should I choose to dance to it again later.

Re: Arabic Speakers - Can anyone give me a hint as to what this song is about?
In a nutshell: Go screw yourself.
I don't know about you, but my mother told me you can catch more flies with honey than with go screw yourself.
I suspect the OP would have done best to leave it at:
Arabic Speakers Out There: Can anyone tell me what this song is about? No need for line by line translation (because this is so last minute), I just want to get the gist of it.
With an addendum of the fact she'd be using it very soon for a non-Arab audience.
But she pre-emptively got defensive towards the exact groups that would be the most help to her; dancers who've made the effort to learn (or start learning) the language / dancers who may not have learned it but who've learned good ways to search for lyrics because they are concerned about those things.Last edited by ozma; 11-05-2011 at 02:14 AM.

Agreed Ozma. I knew it was insulting but wanted to see if or how the OP would answer the query.
