calling all hair divas
ok, my mentor suggested updating my look
so i styled my bra-strap long one-length hair to still bra-strap length(mid back) but with soft layers (shortest is chin length) which feathers down as it lenghtens (with a blowdryer and brush, it looks wispy and framing, without, just me :D)
even my fab stylist says i can curl it.......SO.............i have no clue
what size curlers? under or over curling? how about the long bits, piggyback? what styling tools would i need? (i'm a hippy type, i have NONE)
the look i'd like is hollywood, glamour, even a little vintage, on occasion wouldn't mind edgy when i'm feelin' a little froggy.........looking for a couple of different looks
anyone?

Re: calling all hair divas
What a timely thread!
I always used to do a very loose, scrunchy kind of curl, but would like to know how to do something more structured and less bed-head. I love Dina's over-the-top HUGE curly hair....though that can't be entirely her own real hair. Or is it? .w.:
Give us all your suggestions: we're listening!

I'll talk your ear off about what to do with your hair... ..g.:

Hot rollers! There are some great tutorials if you google "how to use hot rollers." I bet youtube has them, too!

I too vote for hot rollers :-) Use product in your hair and spray some hair spray on each hunk before your roll as well.

Re: calling all hair divas
YUP. With the right product in it...I can even use my marcel grip iron and you can set while I do Anita's makeup. OR if you grab hot rollers, we can use those and I can show you how to use them. Get the set with the most amount of curlers in it, possibly all same size (LARGE if your hair is long).
Then again, since you are doing photo shoot and if you want to make it extra glam, pin curls would be primo. PM me, sweety...

Re: calling all hair divas
when desperate- use a large barrel curling iron for big curls, smaller one for tighter curls.
that's what i do when my naturally curly hair decides to look like a rat's nest or a q-tip

Re: calling all hair divas
Hard to do w/o video
(oh dayum, hair AND makeup for bellydancers DVD now?!) ..l;,
Pincurls give you that wavy, smooth look that can be brushed out for big fluffly curls or styled for that total Hollywood movie look.
The old style way to do it is to completely wet the hair and run lots of gel throughout. You can get away with doing it with damp hair, too.
Section small sections with rattail comb, no more than an inch section strand of hair (in this case, "strand" is referring to a section of hair, not a single hair strand).
Depending on what kind of curl and what section of the head, you can shape the base as a triangle, a barrel, square, blah blah, but basically you want manageable sections, the inch rule works pretty well.
If you want total volume all over, comb out a section so that there are no tangles, hold it perpendicular to the head (i.e., straight out from the head) and starting from the end, curl the end and roll it towards the end.
Keep that strand sticking straight out as you curl inward towards your scalp.
Then, at the BASE of the curl, the part that is right against your scalp, clip the curl with a double prong clip or hair pin. Basically you'll have a little "circle" standing on its edge at your scalp.
Do all over the entire head, then wait for the hair to dry. This wet-to-dry method gives you the longest lasting curl b/c you're actually restructuring the hair. You can use heat, but it will not last as long.
If you want less volume, turn the "circle" so that it lays flat against your scalp, rather than "standing up" on its edge, and clip or pin it so that it looks like a no smoking sign (circle with the slash through it).
You're inspiring me to take pictures and do a tutorial with my mannequin!!! Hmmm...

Re: calling all hair divas
Not a hair diva by any means, but somebody on bhuz posted that they put their hair in multiple buns to curl it. I tried putting my hair in 4 buns when it is almost dry in the morning, and I LOVE how my hair looks when I take them out in the evening. I guess it's pretty similar to pin curls? But LOL, I must have looked awfully CindyLouWho-ish yesterday sporting my little buns at my mother-in-law's for Easter dinner!
I can't get my hair to hold a curl with hot rollers, I can keep the buns in til just before I dance and it makes it though a set, and has a little wave left even the next day.

Re: calling all hair divas
You may want to experiment with the hot rollers before hand. I know my hair refuses to hold the curl for more than 10 minutes when I use them. Looks old school Hollywood glam for a minute or two and then goes completely flat....I typically have to use a small barrel curling iron and a ton of product to keep them (curls) in for any length of time.

For the hard-to-hold-curl-gals (present company no exception!):
What kind of product do you use?
Hot rollers will not hold as well as wet-to-dry styling.
Also, it depends on how you hold and direct the hair as you're hot curling (whether iron or rollers).

Re: calling all hair divas
Same here. If I want curls, I have to get my hair wet and put in some type of product and put in the old fashion pink sponge curlers and wear them over night or I put tons of little buns all over my head. I have to be careful what kind of product I use though because most just make my hair look greesy and unwashed. It makes it hard to sleep and takes forever to get all the curlers in but it is just the only way my babyfine/thin hair will hold a curl.

I have tried mousse and small amounts of hair gel before curling with hot rollers, and I have tried hairspray during and after using the rollers. I have not found a hairspray that will really hold a curl in my hair without having to use enough so it gets stiff and no longer moves nicely. I have fairly fine textured hair. It will "hold" a straightening, though.

Re: calling all hair divas
I believe Bumble & Bumble has some "matte-fying" products that will create more texture in the hair to grab curl. They also have spray called "Spray de Mode" that looks really amazing and will keep moveability in the hair while keeping curl. I have some brides to do in Philly I'll probably pick up some products..

Hmm, will have to keep my eye out. Thank you for the ongoing tips, I now have this glimmer of hope that I can be one of those glamorous girls. Azhia, you should think about getting yourself some product endorsements.
PS I am close enough to Philly to attend a workshop there.

Re: calling all hair divas
I have this charming hair that can't decide what it wants to be--the top layer is straight, the bottom layer wants to curl...in the right humidity conditions I get "big straight hair". And I'm lazy to boot.
I used to straighten it, but that was just kind of hard on my hair. And, it looked nice for photos...but a little flat, and after a show or two, a little like seaweed.
I found that hot rollers and curling irons didn't really work for me for dance no matter what I did with product. Scratch that--product made it muuuch worse! The length of my hair just wanted to pull heat curls out, and if I put product in it, then curled it, then started sweating, I just wound up with hair fused to my back by gooey product in semi artistic (but no longer curly) patterns. And then I had to dry it and do it all over again for the next show, which again, was just too hard on my hair in a two or three or four show night.
What I'm doing right now...I take three little foam "tubes" with snaps on the ends. I put my hair in a high pony tail (except one little section at the crown just in front of the pony.) I wrap that crown section around one tube and snap it shut in a tiny flat bun, then use the other two tubes to divide the pony into a couple of sections and snap them around the pony base to create a two part "bun". For the "dangley bits" of my little forelock that are behind my ear, I just create a little pin curl behind the ear. Then I take a pretty scarf and tie it around my head head band style (the main bun looks ok sticking out, so I just cover the pin curl and the crown bun) and voila--I can go to the grocery store without looking like a *total* doofus (a partial doofus, to be sure....) I can do this a few hours before I dance and when I take it down, I have just a nice, lose natural curl with some little bit of volume that stays better than other means I've tried, and takes me less than 5 minutes to style from unsnapping the first tube to stage-ready hair. The longer I keep the tubes in, the better it stays, and it works best if I spray the hair with a little conditioning spritz as I'm setting it. No heat, no damage.
I could probably still use a lot of help, but for a lazy chick who hates damaging her hair and who missed a lot of days of girl school, I'm pretty happy with myself for getting this far.
