wig over long hair?
hi, all...
who can tell me about brands/types of wigs that will fit over my real hair? it's long waist length, not too thick. also fine and naturally curly, which is why i'm curious about changing my look with spare hair instead of damaging my own with any kind of chemical treatments. (for costume use and maybe the hubby, not day to day...)
related - i know about the stockinglike wig caps to wear underneath, but do you have tips on pinning techniques for the hair to lie flat? one plus is that i have a pretty small head...
thanks in advance,
ashley (chestnut brunette for today, red or raven tomorrow?....)

Re: wig over long hair?
i think your best bet is to get a full cap wig and wear it as a 3/4 wig. you can cover the "seam" with your own hair or a headband/scarf that goes with your costume.
to hide long hair under a wig without a wig cap:
1. put hair in a ponytail below the crown of your head.
2. braid your ponytail and secure with elastic at the end.
3. use large roller pins to secure the braid to the back of your head, as flat-ly as possible.
4. pin on the wig securely useing the x pinning method
5. cover where wig joins your real hair
its really easy and saves so much time and damage to your own hair.
feel free to pm me if you have an "technical" questions ;)

Re: wig over long hair?
I have very thick long hair, but I use a similar method to this, except instead of making a ponytail for step 1 I do a french plait. Otherwise I find I get a little bump where the ponytail starts. If I have enough time, I do two, one running down each side of my head, then wrap the plaits around and pin. Everything else I do exactly the same as Sabrina.

Re: wig over long hair?
What I do is make several small braids and pin them flat. I also use the full cap wigs as 3/4 wigs using a headband to cover the seam. You can also use some of your own hair in the front to blend.
My hair is thick, wavy and sometimes wild. So having a nice smooth wig or hairpiece is a great option for when I want a more polished look. My profile photo is wearing a straight wig as a 3/4 fall over my own long hair.

I did the Indian braids, one on each side, then crossed them over my head like old fashion style, pin, pin, pin------wig cap, then wig. Also if you braid your hair while its wet and pin in it's even flatter so you won't get so many lumps. You can also criss cross the Indian braids under the base of your neck and pin.

ooh, aradia, that sounds like it would be a good trick on my shape head. i also love others' full-wig-as-3/4-wig idea for stage, but it wouldn't be so great if i feel like going for a color different than my own.

Have you considered clip in extentions? You can use these to thicken your hair, add colour in highlights or blocks, add layers or to build into hairstyles. To give you an idea this is my natural hair: http://pics.livejournal.com/kashinthegreen/pic/0008tyx1
And this is done with clips: http://pics.livejournal.com/kashinth...8df16/s640x480
Good quality hair weft for clip ins is also a lot cheaper than good quality wigs, I have several sets and often mix and match with them.

Re: wig over long hair?
Thanks. It is entirely possible. I used to have waist length monofibre extentions (think Barbie) which are incredibly bulky, but I still managed to do wigs by basically wrapping my hair around my head like a turban and pinning it flat. With a long wig you can get away with twisting it into a roll at the nape of your neck.

Re: wig over long hair?
I've forgone wearing my 3/4 fall for my own long hair this year...but I liked the idea of adding clip in extensions...how does one keep these SECURE? I toss my hair a LOT and need it at least as secure as I was able to do for my fall...suggestions?

Re: wig over long hair?
Hairspray, before you clip in. Good clips have a rubber strip opposite the teeth that stops them slipping. Put them close to the root and get a decent chunk of hair in the clip. You could backcomb a little to secure them, but you probably won't need to. I find mine will stay in for tossing about, tugging on handbag straps, pulling into hairstyles etc. The difference between clips and falls is that with a clip the weight of hair relying on each attachment is very small, so they tend to be very secure.

Re: wig over long hair?
Really? No braiding or anthing...just a good tease??? I think I may invest in a set I saw (I think Revlon...) and try it out...I'm the queen of bobby pinning my falls...they've never budged...so having the same security with the extensions would be a blessing!
BTW...the photos of you...gorgeous!

Re: wig over long hair?
Nope, I never braid mine, unless I actually give them a good tug, they won't budge. Unless you are incorporating serious headbanging into your choreography ;)
Thanks :D

I love using wigs and ponytails.
I can't get that straight "I Dream of Jeanie" kind of ponytail look with my hair. I just put a bun on top of my head and clip it on. Know one notices until I tell them.
Thanks for the tips on putting the wig for long hair.
