How awful! I hope they caught it early enough. One of my best friends has had spots of skin removed twice already and she is in her midtwenties. I hope everything turns out okay.

    Re: Public service announcement:

My sister in law told me there have been two major breakthroughs recently with melanoma. In both cases, the stem cells (known as "mother cells") that create the tumor have been isolated. (She was on one of the two research teams that did this.)

This is exciting news, because traditional cancer drugs are good at killing the main body of the tumor (ie, "daughter cells"), but not the original parent cells. This is why people sometimes believe themselves to be cancer free after treatment, only to have new tumors arise a few months or years later. With this discovery, drug companies can now focus on developing drugs that are capable of killing the mother cells too.

Wow! That is amazing. It is fantastic what modern medician can do!

We'll see what happens. We are going to a specialist next week.

Why don't they make regular body lotions with SPF? Not the sunscreens, but a body lotion.
Most of the face (Anti-aging or otherwise) creams have SPF in them now, why not body lotion?
    Or am I missing something?

Remind me to show you my scars sometime. Facial reconstruction after surgery for skin cancer is not fun! But at least mine wasn't melanoma.

Y'know, this morning as I was smearing myself, I thought, "I wish my body lotion came SPF30, and had alpha & beta hydroxies, and had antioxidants..." (because I end up using THREE products, which takes SO MUCH TIME [there's a lot of acreage to cover ..l;, ] and I'd love to use just ONE). Is there a market? Or am I the only vampire out there...?
