With summer approaching, the tan line issue...

As a performer how do you avoid nasty tan lines that won't work with your costumes? Do you fake bake? Use tanning lotion? Think tan lines are natural and just go with it? This will be the first summer I really need to worry about performing and tan lines, so I have been wondering. Do you go outside in your most revealing costume and tan with the top on to create the perfect lines..l;, ? I have never gone tanning and I hoped not to have too but I am wondering if this is the only way to avoid the dreaded tan lines. If you love tanning lotions please tell me the brand of choice. I'm interested to see where this leads...

Since the majority of my costume "tops" are halters, I try to find bathing suits with the same ties, that way the lines aren't overly obvious. I'm not big on 2 pc suits in public but will wear them in while doing yard work to get an even shade front and back. No one wants to see dark shoulders and a white belly. ;-)

You may want to occasionally wear a bandeau (strapless) style sun top to try and get an all over shoulder tan.

I'm trying to be consistent about using Jergen's Natural Glow moisturizer every day or two, with the thought that it will minimize the contrast if I do develop a real tan anywhere. Haven't had a chance to test that theory yet, but it's sunny and 70 out there today, so there's hope!

I agree DON'T tan. Melanoma is never pretty. Jergens natural glow fantastic. For people who don't like the smell of self tanners, California tan makes an awesome sunless tanner odour neutralizer.

I don't actively lay out and tan. I do however play tennis, golf, and rollerblade. I also have to mow my yard. I use 55 SPF but always end up with a tan regardless. Sometimes a farmers tan...

Re: With summer approaching, the tan line issue...

What i learned eons ago was that I could do all of those activities but i had to choose times where the sun was at it's lowest point. In other words, I would mow the lawn at 6 pm, play tennis (well raquet ball) at 7:00 am. I walk on the beach and practice my zills at about 8. My out door activities happen late in the day or early in the morning. even grocery shopping.

That way, I do the indoor stuff during the height of the day.

I actually do this more because I dont' tan, I burn. Very thin, white skin here. Hats, etc are my friends.

But, if you are doing all of this and STILL tanning, I think your best option for when you are putting on a bedlah might be a spray tan OR sleeves and lots of glitter!

It's not just you! I agree totally! After getting over my teens, where I was teased mercilessly for my natural complexion (seriously, why is it ok for people to criticise your skin colour if you are naturally pale? they wouldn't do it to someone with dark skin) I am at one with my natural blue glow. TBH I don't have a lot of choice, I burn like a lobster (and blister) and all fake tans look odd and yellow on me; but as I stopped trying to be tanned, I started to get a lot of compliments about my "pale and interesting" porcelain complexion, so I just make a feature of it now.

Mow your yard in a tube top wearing the highest SPF possible and also wear a sun hat with a wide rim. You will look silly but in the long run you will have healthy skin and NO VISIBLE tan lines.

Did you know in China it is very uncouth to have dark skin. The higher class Chinese carry around parasols (sp?) to keep them from getting dark like the lower class poor farmers and squatters.

Along with the big floppy hat suggestion, get some long-sleeved flowy shirts in lightweight cotton gauze to use as an extra layer over the sunblock.

I agree, no tan is always the goal.

..l;, ..l;, ..l;, I spend most of the summer with a drivers arm tan! I try to stay out of the sun because I am fish belly white and all I do is burn and freckle. I do like the Jergens brand tho. It isn't too stinky or greesy and it is reasonably priced. I only use it in the summer so that my legs don't blind anyone.

If you visit the far east, another thing you notice is that the women wear pale hosiery; in the west stockings/tights/pantyhose usually comes in a tanned colour, out there they are all white or cream.

I think what you could do is wear your bikini bottom as low as your skirts, or lower, and put on a bikini top that covers the same or a little less than your costume.
You will still have a tan line possibiity on your back, but if the straps are at the same position, same width you won't have a problem.

You need to apply sunscreen liberally (most ppl only use about half the recommended amount) or you won't get the product's full SPF benefit. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every 2-3 hours as well.
