    Costuming Snag

So as some of you know I am making my first costume. I had this whole design laid out and now I have run into a snag that I hope that you can help me with. I planned on a bra/belt and making a "cover" out of a sheer material to wear over the bra, under the belt as another Bhuzzer suggested. I really wanted to do arm bands with chiffon (sp) draps on it. Here is the snag. I started to make the bands and as I should have guessed, the top of my arm muffin tops (I am not thin ). So I guess for now the arm bands are out because the elastic has to be tight enough to keep it up. What other options would you all suggest?

I like to make my armbands mostly stiff (with fusible interfacing & a lining) and just a bit of elastic on the underside -- or a sort of gusset or insert in matching lycra. I don't make them very tight -- then I use toupe tape to hold them securely in place.

If my fabric is stretchy -- like a stretch velvet or lycra -- I just use the stretch fabric, nice & wide and doubled -- with no elastic. Again, a little dab of toupe tape will hold it in place securely and it doesn't have to be very tight.

The last two bellas I got had upper arm bands attached to the bra by one or two sequined straps. That way they can be fairly loose but won't fall down (twisting is a whole other matter entirely!)

I like the tape idea. The fabric is stretch velvet so I think that should work. This makes me happy cause I didn't want to give up the look. Do you know if most of these tapes have latex in them? I have a latex sensitivity so I have to be careful.

I made them as you all suggested and the muffin top has disappeared! Now only if I could do that with the belly roll...... Thank you for all your help. I will try to post pics on the "what are you working on thread" soon! I think that I will have to give this costume a name related to Bhuz since everyone here has helped me sooooo much with all of this.

So glad it worked, can't wait to see the pics!

I'm sorry, I don't know about the latex. I'll be the people at Manhattan Wardrobe Supply would know, though, since they specialize in this sort of thing and carry several brands. (that's the link I posted earlier).
