Thread: My zills are ruining my veils!

Does anyone have the problem with their zills catching on their silk veils? I just bought a pair of zildjin's and they are very rough... also my saroyans and turquoise intl zills are getting rough around the edges and are damaging my veils. Does anyone know how to smooth the edges without ruining the sound? Thanks! Cause there are times when I cannot take my zills off to dance with my veil....

I have that problem with my thinner silks and my Turquoise zills; they don't play well together. I've used my Saroyans for a quite a while now without snags though, so if there's no way to sand down the metal maybe it's a matter of using a different set of zills (maybe made with an alloy compound that's not so soft) with silks?

we keep zills on w/ veil work and play zildjians.i keep a roll of sand cloth on hand.you keep the edges sanded for a month or so, then it is fine

When my zills start catching on my veil, I sand them down too. Just a tiny bit around the edges doesn't change the sound.

I haven't had that problem with my Saroyens. Maybe you could try turning the zills around on your finger as long as you aren't zilling and veiling at the same time.

I'm not the Goddess's answer to zills with veil - but on the occasions that I do work with both at the same time, I keep the Zills tucked into my palm unless I'm actually playing them. Zamora's advice sounds good to me - she's a mistress of the art.

You mean there's more than two vendors for good zills? Gees, where have I been? I'm familiar with Saroyan and Turquoise, not anyone else. I'm looking for a nice 2 3/4 in set of brass ones, something with a mellow tone that doesn't give everyone in class a headache! Any more info?
