Thread: Odd/Funny Things We Do in Pursuit of Mysterious Beauty

Ever since the Power Cleavage and spray tanning threads, I've been dying to write a light-hearted and fun article about the bizarre things we do to make ourselves showgirl-ready for gigs. You know, the beauty secrets that we whisper about on Bhuz and in our dressing rooms, but would make our audiences fall over if they overheard. And they think we naturally wake up looking this gorgeous ..l;,

I must say, Tanya's frog/pig Beanie Baby as bra padding story tops the list.

Let's talk about the odd things we slick on our teeth to keep our mouths well lubed , the contraband we smuggle into our bras, the pains we take to match our underwear to our skirts....any and all, umm, "unconventional" beauty tips are fair game. Give me the dirt!

Can I just say I never bought the teeth lube. I really wanted to, but couldn't bring myself to go anywhere that it would be sold (it's not in mainstream in UK), and searching for it on the internet did not appeal either...

As owner of the infamous tooth lube...I got it at a girlie naughty party...Caroline...get some bawdier friends!!!

Side note: even if it did taste like chocolatey goodness, your jaw would still get tired. So they'd have to invent a new and improved Godiva Lube With mild novocaine in it. That would be a dream!

You guys will have to enlighten me...teeth lube? I'm not totally naive...I assume it's a fun grownup thing but what does it have to do with bellydance? Am I missing out on some magic beauty trick? I do have an odd beauty trick for you...I finely grate a raw potato and rub it all over my body after a good soak in the tub. After that I 'buff' with a towel...so much dead skin comes off, more than doing the soak/towel thing by themselves. You have to do this in the tub after you drain it because ewwww...! Don't forget to rinse one more time and moisturize like crazy! I've even done grated potato masks when I felt like my complexion was a little dull. It's not as dramatic an effect with the body, but it will help get rid of those stubborn winter flakes. I envision tons of potatoes mysteriously disappearing from pantries around the world.....

I think there's some sort of acid in potatoes like an AHA. Not to mention, the starchiness must be a great exfoliator!

Teeth lubing is a naughtier--and supposedly more effective--spin on the classic beauty pageant slick of Vaseline on the teeth. For those times when stage fright gives you a bad case of cotton mouth. Makes sense when you think about it: lubes are water-based, slippery and made to, umm, reduce friction (do I sound like an ad or what?) so it would make more sense to coat your teeth with that than gross, gloppy, sticky Vaseline. I haven't experienced it firsthand, as I don't suffer from dry mouth - but many Bhuzzers swear it works like a charm!

Another variant: Nipple Nibblers tingling gel. From a Bhuzzer who shall remain anonymous unless she chooses to step forth

Moisture helps (sweat makes sticky, right?), so I hold my hand under the water shortly and then make the boobies wet so they stay up. Sometimes I just lick my fingers generously if there isn't any water around...

meissoun, you crack me up! My boobs are usually slightly moist due to body sweat. I prepare for a gig in the morning before going to work. Strap your girls in a padded bra and they're moist and ready for placement in the evening.

Longer????? Uuugggghhhh!

I use raw egg as a mask for my face. I have oily skin and the egg seems to both dry the excess oil while leaving the skin feel smooth and soft, refine pores, help get rid of zits, etc. Best of all--it's cheap.

I usually crack an egg, beat it with a fork, slap it on face, let it sit there for about ten minutes. It's kind of icky, so I usually do it before I hop in the shower in case any of it gets into my hair.

I use Olive Oil from my kitchen supplies on my hair.

Avocado oil here...no smell, very light and unsticky. If I use olive oil I find myself craving a pepperoni pizza for days.

I use coconut oil on my hair.

I put a butt mask on my posterior this weekend. ..l;, 1 part cooked oatmeal, 1 part mashed bananas, teaspoon almond oil, teaspoon honey. Slathered it on and laid on my stomach for 20 mins, then showered. I read about this in another beauty forum. I want to have a smooth, soft-as-a-baby butt! I'm not sure if ithelped all that much but I am probably going to keep trying once a week to see if it helps my dry skin any.

If I don't want to do it, you can make it taste like what ever you want......it ain't happening. And on top of all that make it last longer? I'm out!

ETA: I don't really have any beauty secrets. I don't even wear make-up unless it is a wedding or funeral. I do occasionally put honey and olive oil in my hair 50-50 split.

I bring baby wipes to clean my smelly, dirty feet after a long sweaty performance. Not always for dirty feet, but they do come in handy.

Also i sometimes bring baby powder if i get sticky afterwards. I cant stand putting on tight jeans after sweating, especially if my changing room is a tiny closet. I always need air... i ´ve often longed to run out in my underwear.

Xylitol, the sweetener helps to produce saliva if you have a dry mouth...

Oh, now you guys must think of me as Sweaty Betty with smelly feet and dry mouth, runing half naked in my underwear after performance. That could be my alter ego :)

So it took me a day to remember this one although it is not really bellydance. For my senior prom I decided that I didn't want to do the traditional thing as I had done that the year before when I went to prom with an older student. My friends and I decided to go in cosume and I found an awsome "Marie Antoinette" dress. The downer was I didn't own a corsette to get the proper look and I couldn't afford to buy one. So, my friend came up with the idea that we would just use body tape. Of course I didn't know where to find that stuff in high school so we didn't have any of that either. The night of the prom I was desperate so I ended up using duct tape (try not to cringe too much) and wrapped my torso completly in it. It did do the job quite nicely but no one was thinking about the end of the evening when it would have to come off. It ended up being me and two of my friends in a dance club bathroom with me crying ..cr.: while they ripped the tape off of me. I had no fine body hair (and areas of skin) for a long time. Lesson learned. ..l;,

ouch!!! good thinking though, since duck-tape does help your body to keep the shape it needed for the dress.

It is true....duct tape does fix everything!..g.:

ouch - for future, try wrapping yourself in something like Saran Wrap before applying the duct tape.
