Short hair help?
Or should it have been 'Short hair....help!'? I've haunted Tribe for tips on styling short hair and I'm not into tribal hair, though it is beautiful. I'm kind of a tribaret/cabaret girl and I am growing out my own hair though it's still REALLY SHORT. It was boy short when I started, heh, heh, heh. Our student night is coming up on Saturday and I really don't want to wear a wig this time. I want to be comfortable and confident, looking well put together and pretty. I'd post a photo but I don't have the time at the moment this notion to post hit me. I'm wearing a Turkish vest/beaded bra/belt/skirt/harem pant combo in black and metallic gold. It's kind of a tribal look using more glamorous materials. I have a round face and my hair is a medium reddish brown at the moment. If any dancers out there with short hair have links to photos of themselves performing it would help me out a lot. Thanks everyone!

Re: Short hair help?
I have no photos but how about something super slick and chic cabaret singer a la Europe, 1930's?
Or, can you do finger waves?
Or, like when Madonna had super short hair and it was jet black. Pointy, super styled, almost wet-looking?
I think as long as it is purposefully styled, and you maximize your eye makeup, it will look performance-worthy.

Re: Short hair help?
Ever since I cut mine I've tended just to leave it, to be quite honest, but I like a 20s-style "grecian" headband/headdress idea and do that when appropriate. The only problem I have with a lot of headwear is that I have a small head and hair that pokes up and misbehaves.
The other thing I'm exploring - again, depending on the costuming - is turbans. Not those tribal ones, 50s glamourpuss hat style ones. I have a black velvet turban hat that I haven't worn in a lot of years, and it's coming out some time, for serious.
Fingerwaves are cool if you can do them (my hair is generally too short and too opinionated for them to work well on me), slicked down wet hair is great if it suits your look. With the costuming you've described, there's no reason whatsoever not to wear a veil on your head.Last edited by Zumarrad; 05-04-2008 at 10:43 PM.

Re: Short hair help?
Zumarrad I love your hair...
When I had the pixie I also used to wear those beaded headdresses with a scarf wrapped around it to hold it down. I don't think it would work with the particular outfit you described but it may work with other things. Just another option for you. I know what you mean about not wanting to put on the wig. I performed in Philly recently and was so reticent to put on that darn fake ponytail so I just jacked up my pomp, teased my short pony tail so that it was rooster-like and spikey, and stuck one of Tempest's feather head pieces in the back.
If you can attach some sort of groovy head piece that might look cool, too. Feathers, appliques, etc...

Re: Short hair help?
Hmmm....feathers....the boutique I work at sells huge ostrich poofy feathers (naturally molted ones, I hope) in a plethora of colors...I could make a funky tribalesque clip or two out of a couple of feathers. I could slick my hair down with a deep side part and put the clips in the back at the nape to mimic a Spanish type bun. I am wearing a very full black skirt that is kind of Spanish in flavor. I could bling it up with some paillettes and beads...thanks girls!!!

Re: Short hair help?
BTW I love Tempest's hair and she is so beautiful to boot. As far as the clips go I'll have to be careful to keep them smallish (I'll be doing a veil choreo) or they'll get hung up. Totally off subject here: my four and half year old son was asking who all the dancers were in the ads here and I was describing who the were. Suddenly he announced that he could do snake arms and he started doing them, four year old boy style. How freakin' cute is that? He even does the cutest hip circles, heh, heh, heh.

Re: Short hair help?
*blush* aww shucks :) Thanks!
I do a LOT of veil work, with a ton of feathers in my hair (at least a whole chicken or two it seems), and the key thing is to sufficiently pin things in (like with my hair thingies, I'll bobby pin them down if I know I'll be doing veil or a lot of spins), and to remember to really lift through your upper body when hoisting the veil near your head.
I have a bunch of new hair designs, but I'm getting ready for Tribal Fest next week...I'll post them when I get back (if I have any left..or at least have reference pix).
