hah! That celery looks like it's seen better days. :)
I'm sorry the crock pot didn't work out...I only make pot roast and beef stew in ours. I'm scared to branch out into things that involve rice!

Re: things that should not be on public display
The great thing about cooking is that it's pretty easy to learn how to make simple dishes. Don't give up! Get a good basic cookbook, like the one Better Homes and Gardens publishes. Or watch the Food Network. Or do searches on cooking on YouTube. Or, best of all, take a cooking class or ask someone you know to teach you how to cook a particular dish. Really, don't let one "failed" meal turn you off. Cooking from scratch is a skill that anyone can develop.
And actually, I don't think your dish looks all that bad. The rice has an interesting crust. Cut up the veggies next time and experiment with seasonings.

By the way, what's that raspberry-colored blob in the lower right corner?

I have to say that's one of the ugliest dinners I've ever seen. Congratulations!
PS sometimes the ugliest things taste the best.... think about the dude that was brave enough to eat the first lobster!

"Pimp My Dinner" ..l;,
Awww, thanks for sharing, Jes. "A" for effort.
I think a cooking class is a really good way to go. I didn't learn to cook (though I loved and collected cookbooks) until I started to take cooking classes. I traded dance lessons for cooking lessons, one on one. The best time spent ever.
You can dooo eeet!!

My experience is that meat and vegetables are good in the crock--rice/noodles--not so much.

I was a little afraid this would happen when you said you put rice in the crock pot. Ooof.

Re: things that should not be on public display
ITA with Taj. I've always been a pretty good cook, but it took me about 5-6 years of following recipes by the letter before I could occasionally throw together something on my own. If you cook from recipes, you get a feel for cooking times, what ingredients do (and don't) go together, etc.
And even after all this time, I still get a dud with my original...uh, "creations" from time to time.

Re: things that should not be on public display
This thread just keeps on giving - I haven't laughed this hard in a VERY long time! That remark about the sweet potato made me laugh so loud the cat left the room!
As someone who has problems boiling water without burning it, I can relate!

Re: things that should not be on public display
Ha ha ha! Reminds me of the first time I made egg salad, er, puree' in the blender. I was trying to get the yolks nice and creamy. It also reminds me of the first time I broiled steak in the oven; can you say 'twelve inch flame length'? Oh yeah, it ALSO reminds me of the first time I made Mar Far chicken, which turned out well. What didn't turn out well was the chicken carcass in the oven that my boyfriend (now husband) found three weeks later. He kept complaining of the 'horrible stench' in the kitchen that he couldn't find the source of...thank goodness he didn't marry me for my cooking skills!

It is SOOOOO comforting to know I'm not the only woman who is challenged in the kitchen. I've got the OTHER room down pat!!!!!
