    Hair bands for weird-shaped heads?

I see dancers wearing beautiful matching headbands with their costumes, or even the standard stretchy ones you can find in the mall, and I can't wear them because of the shape of my head! It isn't that they look funny, but after just a few minutes, the part of the band hidden by my hair starts sliding up the back of my head, like the knobby part at the back of my skull is too flat. .w.:

I've tried the stretchy, pointy ones that look like a giant ring of zigzags, I've tried the plain ones, arc headbands just fall off, I don't know what else to try! A bunch of my troupe dances involve hair tosses, and I really need something to keep my hair out of my face, but I'm having no luck at all.

Am I the only weird-shaped-head girl out there? Or do you all know fantastic hair and headband tricks that I don't? Help!

I'm not quite sure what the answer is though I'd be really interested to find out too. I do know exactly what you mean when you describe this problem.

If its any consolation, I really have to wear a headband when performing to keep my monster hair out of my face/everyone else's face. However due to the sheer volume and wildness of said monster hair, I usually end up using some big old cotton scarf to do this. I've never yet worn/tried on a 'pretty' headband that wasn't either dwarfed/swallowed/destroyed by the hair from hell..cr.:

You could try the multistrand type so you can position one farther forward on your head, one a little farther back. Lightly hairspray and tease your hair at strategic spots and pin the sucker down. Or, you can handstitch toupe' clips to the underside of your hair band...those little suckers grip like crazy. You can get them at your local beauty supply and they're inexpensive. Happy hair tossing!

Sounds like a big issue is keeping hair out of your face.
Try a June Carter (2nd photo down), or a more modern version with a slight "pump" or like Fergie.

Either way, back-comb underneath the area where you would clip it to grab the clip. Then you add flowers or other decoration to the back-combed, clipped area.

Hair can remain down, hair is out of the face, and you don't need to worry about headband coming off.

    OR...

Sew a small plastic comb into the section of the band that goes up against the nape of your neck. You can get these at craft supply stores with bridal stuff. Add it so it grabs upward. Then back-comb the area of hair just above where the comb grabs.

I hate headbands. They just kind of slide backwards off my head (and usually end up stuck in an earring). I did recently have a show which required a headband, so I sewed a stretchy pharaonics headband onto a very toothy plastic headband from CVS. The toothy headband was tight enough to give me a headache if worn for any length of time, but worked well for the 5 minutes I needed it! :)

dear Belle3wa, i am your flatnape twin. i also have a generally small head and fine, silky hair. so yes, i, too, have lost a headband during the gentlest of standing backbends before! thank you for being my fellow dork (heh) and to the rest, thanks/tia for helping us to succeed in having sparklyheads like the rest of ya!

I have the sliding-up-the-back-of-my-head problem, too! I wear my headbands very loose (make my own if necessary) and use bobby pins or those little clip barrettes to anchor them in place around my face -- if the back bit is nearly dangling, so be it!

I LOVE the idea of sewing in toupe clips, I saw some of those at Sally near the extensions just the other day, what a BRILLIANT idea

What fabulous ideas! I think I'm going to pick up some toupee clips and see how they work, and then go for the fabric sewn over one of the hard headbands.

I wore a hair-braid headband during a solo last year--my first try at choreography-- and it slipped off my head from a series of spins and body circles. Fortunately I was able to catch it and fling it to the back, but I haven't dared try it since!

I don't have so much problem with the sliding up the back of my head (my occiptal is quite pronounced) as the fact that headbands look weird on my head unless they are very far back, ie sitting really on the very top of my head. The old u-shaped fabric covered Alice band thingy works best for me.
