How Do You Measure Correctly For A Costume?

I have been perusing the swap meet for awhile looking for just the right bra and belt set. Where do I measure for an accurate hip measurement? Just below the waist so it "sits" on my hip bones or around the fullest part of my hips including my behind? Thanks.

I would say the most important things to know are your skirt length--a good guideline to consider is how far it is from about the top of your hip bone to the top of your foot. You may want to wear your skirt higher or lower, so measure accordingly.

Then, measure your high hip measurement--put a tape measure about an inch or so below your belly button and measure around your hips.

low hip measurement is measuring around the widest part of your hips. Some belts fall a little above the widest part.

Also, know your bra size--kind of a no-brainer!

    :)

    Happy swap meet stalking!

I used to measure the widest part of my hips (which is different from the widest part of my butt, actually - I have high hips and a low butt). But I learned to stop doing that because all the costumes were arriving too big. I got measured my Audrena, and she took about 4 inches off my hip measurement. That costume fits perfectly.

It's best to have someone else measure you to get the most accurate measurment.

As Nepenthe mentioned, people tend to overestimate there measurments because the are moving while they are measuring.

I love cheesey-cheese, and Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! is such a great film.

The signature was an adaptation of the film title and my absolute conviction that glitterdot fabric is evil! :)

I even <gasp> practiced dancing today (only confirming how much I still need to practice).

    Here is some glitterdot.

Avoid at all costs, especially when made into harem pants!

Sniff sniff, I like glitterdot, in small doses. I wouldn't make an entire pair of harem pants out of it, and it is a pain to sew with it, but I like it :( Why do you hate it so much? Just curious-my infinite attraction to sparkly just draws me to it.

Sorry I know off topic!!! I agree about getting other people to measure you-and stick to the measurements. I had a bad habit of adding inches, and I always wound up doing some pretty major alterations. Lesson learned!
