Would this make a nice belly dance dress?
I'm not able to put photos here on bhuz, so here's a link to the dress, I found in an old magazine.

If I made something similar to this, I thing I'd make it a cut out under the top center jewel, and have the jewel dangling. I'm thinking of making it in burgundy, and brown.
What do you think?
BTW, I was thinking of crocheting all the striped areas.Last edited by gothique; 06-05-2008 at 12:00 PM. Reason: crochet

I like the overall design but I would make the bra cups a LOT sturdier, especially around the sides. As is they look like a costume malfunction waiting to happen.

Ooo, cool. I think it would be a great costume. I agree with Sarakat about making the bra part sturdy. Perhaps after you crochet it, you could sew a bra into the top to make it more supportive.
I gotta share a costume horror story with you since it seems applicable to this costume. I went to a student show once and a student wore a bathing suit bikini top as part of her costume. I watched in horror the whole time unable to concentrate on her dancing worried about her coming out of that top. She never did, thankfully, but it took away from the performance.

Ho-chee mama! That's hot! I agree that I'd do the bra cups (and straps) a whole lot sturdier than this one. I'm probably also make the hip band a little more substantial size-wise or maybe a little more shaped (my personal taste). The general design of it has a lot going for it in terms of morphing it into a successful b-dance dress.

I didn't think about how sturdy the top of it was...thank you for the advice!
I'd like to avoid any 'wardrobe malfunctions'.

Re: Would this make a nice belly dance dress?
Yes, it is an awesome dress, and I think we would all like one please (with more substantial cups). Looks a bit expensive to make in terms of types of beads, but the top/stomach cross/belt thing could be made of woven ribbon/braid trims just sewn onto a fabric base? I can see why this was intriguing for you, and I'd love to see follow-up if you make one (might even put in an order, so make a few!). The skirt/veil looks like lettuce edged silk chiffon which you can get not too expensively at Dharma Trading Co. (edge it yourself of course) then dye it... what a fun project!
