Making Double Veils--Weighting?
So I'm in the process of making a set of semi-circular double veils for a workshop coming up next weekend (yay shimmyfest.com!) And following the advise of some folks in tribe.com I added trim to the edge of one of the veils to add weight to it. I am using chiffon fabric (a no-no per Shira but all I have available here in the middle of no where) and I used double fold quilt binding for the trim--no sequin trim or anything shiny was available or affordable. Besides I kind of like the modernistic look of the quilt binding. Am making a black veil with white trim and white veil with black trim.
So here's the question: I finished putting the trim on the curved edge of the black veil last night, no trim on the straight edge yet (got some silver rick rack for that!) and played around with the veil a bit and it just seems.... unwieldy, hard to move. Sure, one handed spins "work" but I'm now wondering if i've added too much weight. Shira's page says to add 1 to 1.5 inch sequin trim to the edge so I know the quilt binding doesn't weigh as much as that. Do you think the quilt binding was a bad idea? Do you think it will straighten itself out once I trim the straight edge? Should I use something more substantial for the straight edge trim?
Sorry so verbose!!!

Re: Making Double Veils--Weighting?
I think it might be too much. But what's most important is to have bias tape for the trim - that will curve along the circular edge. I'm not sure of the quilt binding in general / or that one in particular is bias. If not, I would suggest to take it off, because it won't work with curves.
I couldn't even even attach it nicely, if it wasn't bias.

It is bias, it is the same as normal bias binding, only about 7/8 inch wide instead of the normal 1/2 inch or so wide.

Then I think it should be ok. You might want to use the same kind of trim for the straight edge.
Practice with it a lot, maybe you're just not used to it.

If your fabric options are limited, double georgette would be a much better choice than chiffon. I would put this edging around the curved edge of a georgette veil: Making Belly Dance Costumes: Turkish Edging . And then I would put paillettes on the very outer edge about once every inch.
