in love with a Viking
yes, after a demo at the fabric shop, I am newly infatuated with the Husqvarna "Viking Emerald 116":

Has anybody else tried this line? What was your experience? It has something called auto-sensor or auto-tension or something. So in the demo they never had to change the foot tension for any fabric; it just sewed neatly through everything.
Alternatively, does anybody have a sewing machine they are really happy with? I basically wanted something that goes forward and back, plus maybe a zigzag. Anything else just scares me...I'm a candlewicking/needlepoint girl.
I'm probably not going to purchase a machine til September or so; so I would love to hear any suggestions.Last edited by lotus; 07-15-2008 at 10:29 PM.

Re: in love with a Viking
I have a "vintage" singer that does that... with manual application, and I like it that way. ha-ha.

Well, how disappointing. I clicked on this thread because I was sure I was going to see some titian-haired, bare-chested scandinavian hunk.

sorry it's the best picture I could find. Googling 'viking stud' only returned pictures of racehorses.

I have an Elna Jubile... it's older, but after the clunky White and Dressmaker (read: "STRESSmaker") machines I struggled with for years, I have to agree with my sister: it "sews like a dream."

Re: in love with a Viking
This Viking (the sewing machine ..l;,) sounds intriguing! I have an old Singer that was my mom's. It sews forward and backward - no zigzag. I've been considering getting a new machine for years. Of course, then I might actually have to start sewing again. I used to make all my own clothes -- but that was before dance.

Re: in love with a Viking
They're a little more expensive, but I've been really happy with my Janome Sewist 521: Janome - 521, Sewist 521
It goes forward, back, zigzags, and does buttonholes. It's a fancy basic machine, more or less. I haven't had any troubles with it at all, unlike my brother's new base-model Singer, which has been a pain in the behind.

Re: in love with a Viking
The local sewing machine store sells an extensive line of Janomes, and the owner said that Janome used to make Singer and other brands, and finally decided to market under the Janome name. He also said that Singer used to be dependable, but not any more. So I've been considering Janomes too...

I have a Kenmore Mini Ultra from Sears that I like....it has about 10 different stitch styles, and the 4-step buttonholer option

Re: in love with a Viking
My Singer has auto-tension, but it's a model from 1991 (high school graduation gift!) I have sewn tons of items on it, in varying fabrics. I've never had it professionally serviced, but try to oil it once in a while. I wonder around what year did Singer switch to not-so-reliable. Would be good to know in case a used model pops up.
Oh, and I was looking for some Viking love, too! I'm currently in love with these Vikings: herzensart by sandra monat - Galerie

I like my White Jeans Machine, circa 1997. I don't think it has auto-thread tension, but it is really easy to use. I also has a variety of stitches and a button-holer.

Re: in love with a Viking
And clearly I'm hungry this afternoon, because I clicked on it expecting a Viking Range!
As for sewing machines, I have a Kenmore 13-stitch that is older than I am (it's from when Kenmores were made by Singer, and when Singer still used metal parts) It weighs a ton and sews like a workhorse. It has, obviously, 13 stitches, though in truth it really just does straight, zigzag, and a couple of variations on a theme of zigzag, as well as buttonholes.
I bought it for $30 at a rummage sale, got it tuned for an extra $60, and have been good to go! That's what I recommend to my friends as well, especially if they are just learning to sew, to look for a 30-40 year old Singer or Kenmore at a yard sale - as long as they are in decent condition, with a quick visit to the sew-vac, you can have a machine that can take a ton of abuse.
