Ow....ow.....ow......
I got a vivid reminder last night of what a bad combination motorcycles and gravel are.....c::
It all happened in scary slow motion, I felt the bike slide out from under us (DH was driving), I saw him hit the ground, I flew over him and the whole right side of my body hit the pavement ..cr.:
He had a nasty laceration above his eye, opened an artery so it was bleeding like crazy--he's got some really nicely done stitching and a helluva black eye to show for it this morning. Everything on me that hit hurts, it feels like I ran full tilt into a brick wall.

OMG, baby!!!!! How road-rashed ARE you? Where are your injuries? Is your neck OK?
Sounds to me like DH wasn't wearing a helmet? Were you? Don't make me come up there and kick your behind, young lady, I can't afford the gas!!

Re: Ow....ow.....ow......
I saw a gnarly motorcycle accident last Saturday and Selayma, my teacher rides, so I always worry about motorcycles.
07-26-2008 11:08 AM #5Re: Ow....ow.....ow......
Mercifully no road rash, but the capris and hoodie I was wearing are toast. Both ankles, my right knee/hip, right elbow&rib cage, both shoulders and neck hurt like hell. I didn't see the ER doc.....
No we weren't wearing helmets (I know I know!) Our evening routine is that DH takes the kids out one at a time for a ride (they can't even look at it until their helmets are on) and after that it's my turn. I have protective eyewear but the adults are boneheaded where helmets are concerned.
Remember, this is Idiot Girl you're talking too...I never got around to getting that tetanus shot after stepping on that rusty nail at a gig 2 years ago either

oh, kimhari, please please please please never ride again without a helmet!
I can't tell you the number of tragic brain injured folks I run into on the job. It's not worth the risk.
Really.

So, at what age will you be letting your kids ride without a helmet?

Re: Ow....ow.....ow......
Two words: brain buckets!
If I didn't feel sorry for/worried about you, I would want to take a whack at you. Yes, feeling the breeze is awesome, but so is coming home whole and not leaving your family with broccoli for a mom.
I will give you bravery points, though, for posting this. I don't know if I would post something that I knew I'd get in trouble for. ,r:;

It's just now occurring to me how much worse this could have been. I'm just so happy that you're alright.

You mean it's legal in the states to ride a motorcycle without a lid? Wow! It's been illegal here for as long as I can remember.
I'm *so* glad it's nothing worse Kimahri. Hope you feel better soon.

You know..kids are much more likely to do what you do, rather than do what you say. Will they be riding when they are well past you telling them what to wear? Time to be the grown up parent and lead by example... Sending you good wishes....and a spanking,

Bea - it varies from state to state. Here in Cali you can't ride without a helmet. In others it's not mandatory.
Kim - I agree with Andrea, from one motorcycle riding mama to another, I'd whack if I wasn't so glad you are okay.
Take care of your self and invest in a feisty pink helmet.

I never thought it was a big deal.....tooling around side streets in our little burb at around 20mph....Born to Be Mild! ..g.:
This has been quite the reality check, nobody is riding without a helmet anymore. If I want wind in my hair I'll open the moonroof in the car.

Re: Ow....ow.....ow......
Glad you're ok!
We almost got into an accident, some air had lifted the bike and I nearly fell off.
Since then, always closed toed shoes/boots and helmets.
Yikes...
Have you taken the motorcycle safety course? If I owned a bike I would definitely take that, teach you how to slide with the bike if you tip, etc.
Wind in the hair just puts major knots in it anyways.

20 miles an hour 100 years was respected for the killer speed it was..and still is. We have become jaded watching action movies with unscathed survival of the cartoon kind!

Re: Ow....ow.....ow......
Whoa, glad you are ok!
As a biker myself I shall swat you for not protecting your noggin *swat*. Yeah it makes your hair go sweaty, but it does keep your brains in, and go for a full face one, I've seen photos of what happens when someone glides gracefully down the road on their face, and it's not pretty.
I am also going to swat you for riding in capris *swat*. Boots, jeans and a strong jacket at least! I even feel a little nervy about riding in jeans since meeting a guy who spread his right buttock down the road when he came off in jeans.
Serious hon, look after yourself, you might not be as lucky next time.

Re: Ow....ow.....ow......
I've owned five motorbikes..currently have a fleet of three: one sportbike and two vintage Hondas. I crashed a bike, breaking the spine of my scapula. At every doctor's office I went into I heard, "Well! We don't see this injury very often." It turns out that it is very uncommon to see this injury because most people that get it DIE of head injury in automobile accidents. I'm fine now though because I was wearing a helmet, leather jacket, gloves, and racing boots.
I NEVER ride without a helmet, long pants, boots (I wear hiking boots) and a sturdy jacket, even if it's hot as balls and everyone else is in T-shirts, shorts and flip flops.
So, I've been drooling over this lovely helmet...

Re: Ow....ow.....ow......
A wise rider -- you should dress for the bike as if you KNOW you're going to be coming off it.
I have some dead friends and others I worry about. I don't ride cycles and so far haven't had a boyfriend who did. Don't need any more worry.
I'm glad you're both going to be okay, but you need to dress better... and wear helmets.Last edited by ghazallah; 07-26-2008 at 03:23 PM. Reason: clarity...

Re: Ow....ow.....ow......
Then stick hotfix rhinestones all the hell over it. They'll see you coming a mile off!
I'm very sorry you're sore and very, very glad you're otherwise OK! Be as gentle as you can with yourself -- your body and brain have both been through a big shock. Don't hesitate to see a doc if something feels wrong as the initial soreness wears off, because sometimes sprains and small fractures don't really become apparent till later. (My brother is a reckless, fearless, macho, stoopid enduro rider, so I've seen a lot of this, believe me.) Hope you feel better very soon!
