Re: how do you tell its done?
Reminds me of a friend that volunteered to cook Thanksgiving dinner for her family, over 25 people. She prepared a lovely meal and all was going well until it was time to cut the turkey. Not only did her Dad ruin the electric knife when he located the metal clips holding the drumsticks together but she neglected to wash out the cavity. Yup, all the organs packed in the bag were still inside. (No giblet gravy since the main ingredients were in there.) Sadly she seemed to make a habit of forgetting to clean the cavity. Funny but strange.
Jes, depending on the size of the hen 5 hours on high in a crock pot could be enough. If you do not have the crock pot cookbook or know the weight of the hen the safest way to be certain is to cut into the thickest area of the hen - usually the breast. If the color is consistent throughout (no pink or red visible), it should be OK.
Love this remark: boy that was a nasty surprise
Cats love the hearts and parts. Almost like finding something edible in the yard - without all the challenges of pursuit.
Reading your posts - always a joy.

If the meat is falling off the bone, it's done. (Husband's wisdom, not mine.)

Nooooo! Not another crock pot experiment. What Tedi said, if it's falling off the bone, then consider it murdered.

Re: how do you tell its done?
As a rule, my former FIL was the cook in the family. My former MIL has never lived down the first year she decided she was going to do Thanksgiving dinner herself. She didn't realize the turkey should be thawed first. Roasted it at 450° for 5 hrs. It was blackened to a crisp on the outside, still froze solid on the inside, including the bag of giblets.

I thought this was about how do you tell if a creative project is done.
I look and see that Adventures of Crock Pot Part Deux is underway...
9-month old baby nursing is not pathetic. I have friends who still nurse her 3-to-4-year olds...Not that I'm saying that's pathetic. Just saying that you're not pathetic, Jes. ;0)

Re: how do you tell its done?
Ah, so you found the giblets and neck buried inside the cavity? Yes, those are usually placed there. In the future, you'll want to remove them from the cavity before you cook the chicken - if you leave them inside, it can take longer for the chicken to finish cooking.
Personally, I enjoy eating the heart, gizzard, and liver, though the neck doesn't interest me. If they don't appeal to you as is, try this - boil the giblets separately from the chicken. Get some Stovetop Stuffing chicken-flavored, and cook according to the instructions on the box, and use the hot water left over from boiling the giblets as your hot water for making the recipe - it give it extra flavor. Use a kitchen shears to cut up the giblets into small pieces and add them to the stuffing before you serve it. Then serve it with the chicken!

Re: how do you tell its done?
oh but Tori Amos was just trying to make one of those far out artistic statements by nursing a pig!!! lol
reminds me of some of the crazy bellydance interpretations i hear about. i bet Mish Mish knows exactly what i'm talking about (giggle) :)
i had a talk with the cats and told them there was no reason mr oreo cat couldnt eat the parts since they didnt want it..
and for clarification yes the kitten is nursing from its mum not me :) i cut my own baby off at six months cuz it has razor sharp teeth and wouldnt stop biting me..
but in answer to a question? yes you can breastfeed after some aug surgeries, my incision is a discreet area under the armpit and i lost no sensitivity at all in fact i'm still leaking milk
soon to be released: a full color catalog menu of crock by jes!
