okay!
i've been trying cool curly/wavy looks for a more 'old cairo bed head' look, like the stars of the golden age.........or old hollywood
azhia showed me some tips n tricks for the best look..........i let it out, and it looks amazing...........then falls after only an hour..........
i use the cool 'hold' sprays before (on dry hair), leave the set in for almost an hour (to make sure the misting dries), then spray the living daylights afterward.....and it STILL fell.....
now i henna'd my hair the night before......would that affect the hold of a curl? it WAS humid, but by the time my performance came, it was almost stock straight again, as if i let it out wet...............
any ideas, best products, or should i just accept the fact i'll never hold a curl?

It sounds like you might need a different product to put in your hair before you curl it.

I also think, as I remember Ruta, that you have very heavy hair. I have a hard time with the same thing. Seems it only held a curl when I use to have some layering to lighten the load. It seems to me that most of the styles you see in mags, the models have some layering of some type. Maybe I am wrong.

I have the same problem only my hair is very fine and straight, not thick and heavy. I used to get perms but now I just use wigs and hairpieces for performances.

Re: tried to curl, lasted only an hour.....help!
I have the same friggin problem! I love the look of my hair when I take them out of curlers and style it, but it ALWAYS falls flat an hour later, leaving me with a "just barely there" wave. So frustrating after all that work! I spray with a bit of light hold spray, wrap my hair around the curlers, leave in for about an hour (should be PLENTY of time), unwrap my hair, and toss to loosen the curl up. It looks great....until an hour passes. Then it's flat again. Help! My hair is fine, not too thick, and it's layered. I don't know what gives.

my hair is very fine and very straight, i got it layered a while ago (love it, softens my features), and the longest goes to almost my waist, shortest about my chin......i have ALOT of it, but i'm wondering maybe i have to find the uber-hold product without getting crunchy or stiff.....

How are you rolling the curlers? Did you overdirect them and roll so that they're tight against your head or are they rolling about?
Bumble & Bumble B Styling Prep. My brides will swear by it...

I have the same problem with curlers, but for some reason a curling iron stays set. Maybe because it's hotter? Have you tried a curling iron? I do very small pieces at a time and just wrap them around the outside of the iron (I don't ever open the clamp so as to avoid little bo peep ringlets).

Re: tried to curl, lasted only an hour.....help!
I also have very fine and straight hair. (I remember a boy in my choir in high school asking me if I hung bricks from my hair to make it so straight.)
I've been having good success this summer (in Virginia) with rolling damp hair on foam rollers at least 3-4 hours before I intend to style it. The curl stays much, much better than with hot rollers (which I was putting in about 2 hours before to let them cool all the way).
Will be trying Azhia's Bumble suggestion soon.

Re: tried to curl, lasted only an hour.....help!
I have the same problem too! I love curling my hair for performances, but my hair is really heavy and almost down to my bum at this point. I use curlers (not the hot iron) and leave them in over night (about 12 hours) and it looks great when I take the curlers out and spray the heck out of it but after an hour...you know the story. Maybe I should try putting in some sort of holding product before the curlers?

Re: tried to curl, lasted only an hour.....help!
I always put product in my hair when it's wet, right out of the shower. If your hair drys with no product on it, you have to layer tons of spray, so definitely get a gel or mouse that will help keep the curl. I like to mix Redken volume lift with Pureology Texture Twist. I do the gel first, then the texture twist, a small amount, and when you rub your hands together and pull them apart, it comes out stringy like you have gum on you hands!! I scrunch that through my hair, let it dry, then set it on either hot curlers, or use an iron. The foam rollers work well too, but I'm all about gunking up the product in my hair while its wet. Trust me those stars on TV who have those soft bedhead locks, probably have so much product in their hair!!!

Yuppers, Bumble & Bumble B Styling Prep. Pump spray.
Ruta, try the pin curls like we were going to do. Just for an experiment when you have a whole day to let your hair dry. Wet styling produces the longest strongest curl.

What Azhia said. If you do it wet and let the hair go *bone dry* it will stay much better. The second you put moisture into the hair it will start to drop, so don't add any styling product afterwards, with the possible exception of hairspray.

Re: tried to curl, lasted only an hour.....help!
I've done curling iron, hot rollers, steam rollers, pin curls (overnight)...
and they ALL fall out!! Usually within an hour!! And, I use mousse before hand and hairspray it to death afterwards. I'll try the bumble & bumble. Good luck Ruta!

Re: tried to curl, lasted only an hour.....help!
I always wet set curls, and use plenty of setting lotion (I'm really into vintage hair, so I do a lot of pincurl sets overnight). Setting lotion is awesome. My hair is very fine and flyaway but I have had pincurl sets hold for 3 days (although on the third day they are just waves).

Re: tried to curl, lasted only an hour.....help!
I tend to use whatever comes to hand. I quite like Silka, it's very old school and give the hair a good plasticy texture to work with for fingerwaves and suchlike, but doesn't dry too crispy. Silhouette by Swartzkopf is ok, but not as strong a hold. Kerastase on the other hand I really didn't like, it's too gloopy and can't be used in a spray bottle.
Incidentlally a lot of ladies I talk to about this stuff use Lotta Body - but I can't get that here.

Re: tried to curl, lasted only an hour.....help!
Ruta... I like using Aveda's hair potion. It's a powder in a little green bottle. Pour out some about a the size of a dime or nickel into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together... it will turn from a powder to a sticky lotion and then apply to dry hair... preferably dry dirty-ish hair.
Do I need to come out there an help you experiment with the hair products?!? I will you know. :)
Miss ya... love ya!

Hey, Ruta? I love your hair!
I've been experimenting with this myself. I have a fair amount of hair, but it's fine and hard to curl, so I follow all these threads with interest. Anybody have inspiring photos to share? Yours or Samia Gamal's -- I'd love to see them all!
Aradia's got it goin' on:
