I'm betting that with this particular skirt in the pic, the skirt edges are all cut on the bias and serged, and that stretches the edges out enough to make them curly. But there is also a method where you bead over the edge of a skirt and then run heavyweight clear nylon fishline through it. See 4th pic here in my "stuff" album; that's the way this skirt was done. Gives it a very big curly-floaty edge. You do have to leave 2-3 inches of extra line sticking out at the ends so it doesn't come unthreaded too easily.

i think the ruffles are cut in what we used to call a 'snail' pattern...it kind of looks like a spiral cut from a large circle, and when you sew the inner edge, the outer edge is the ruffle part. (not sure if that is making sense) ,r:; we used to use them for ruffles on the wedding dresses sometimes. but yes, they do sometimes sew fishing line type of stuff in the edge to help it stand out more.

No, I don't think there is any fishing line in that. Shayna has sewn sequin strings to give it the stiff look. I think Cindy's idea is the right way.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was actually saying I did not think there could be fishing line in Shayna's skirt . . . and that there really is a method of making curly edges with fishing line, but it's quite a different thing with a different look.

    Re: curly skirt parts anyone?

why thanks, Jasani for showing me this thread!!! thank you all for the compliments!!! he he he...... well my inspiration for the curly cues was from a bella skirt i saw well 2 different ones actually cuz i also liked the feathers dangling down. I got the idea of putting both together.

i never thought to do a snail like cut from a circle to make them a longer curlyque...hhhmmmm might have to try that next time.... heres what i did...

i just cut half circles out, kinda like you would for a circle skirt but smaller cuz you still need to have that radius cut out as well so that it curls!!!.....hemed them and then sewed on the sequin trim. to make the curlyques longer i just sewed 2 or 3 of them together. i also just used the sewing machine to add the peacock feathers in them. took a lot of time because of all the sequin trimming to sew on all of those little half circles!!!

ill take close up pix of the skirt and post it.. keep in mind it looks better far away then it does up close!! ha ha but whos really gonna notice the novice sewing skills!! LOL...

Those are feathers? I thought you found some really cool beaded sprays and added them to the belt.

If you have ever see the Endless Wave Harem pants, they use a similar technique for the waves. . .

    It's a beautiful costume!

I believe that the "endless wave" parts are cut on a bias in a elongated triangle.

These dresses have a similar pattern for the flounce. The pink dress is the elongated triangle, similar to the endless wave and the orange dress is like Shayna's skirt.

Strangely enough I've been wondering the exact same thing, I keep seeing these ruffley dangly bits and they look gorgeous.
I found a fairy costume in a shop that had some, and when I flattened it out it was a spiral.
Shayna, that costume is exqusitely beautiful, and so are you!

This is really funny - I was thinking about the spiral the other day, randomly. Does anyone have any illustrations on how the spiral works?

Shayna, please post a picture of your curly-q's flattened out. I LOVE that skirt. What material did you use?

oh cool! I'm glad some other people are contemplating this too. I was wondering if you cut a 1/2 circle into slivers if that would work. What do yo u think?

WOW, love it, beautiful! LOL, I am just starting to learn how to thread my serger and wanted to work up to something like this with the overedge or rolled hem finish and have been very curious about the fishing line too. Thank you.

    Re: curly skirt parts anyone?

For the fishing line, the cheap and dirty way is - you could make a "zig-zag" stitch with your machine over a little rolled hem and the fishing line. That way some of the fabric will roll over the line with the stitch. I don't know about how to buy it but I would get the smallest roll of fishing line so you get the max curl.

Other than that, I think you need a special foot to do that, maybe a rolled hem foot - but I never learned how to use one of those. I've always used one foot for most of the things I sew.

My serger machine rolls & cuts the edge of the material off. Any ideas on how to keep the fishing line in place, without curling?

    Re: curly skirt parts anyone?

I had good luck using my serger by feeding the fishing line through the center area of the pressure foot while creating a rolled hem. Feeding it through that area kept it from getting cut with the fabric edge.
