Thick Hair: How on earth do you get hair clips to stay?
Hey
I know we've had a lot of thick hair threads but I have a very specific question about hair clips. My hair is utterly wild and monstrous but I've learned to manage its ways for the most part over the years. However, I've never been able to put cutesy things in it. Hairbands and Alice bands I can do and I did once manage to get it pinned down with the world's most enormous crocodile clip when I was 15 (that was until a classmate stole it and put it on his penis
- whole other story).
Its the cute clips and decorations that I can't do. There's so much hair that they sort of float around on the surface layer looking distinctly 'unattached' or are engulfed in about 5 seconds (after which it takes ages to re-locate and remove them).
The reason I'm asking is I've just found the most amazing collection of hair accessories on Etsy and think some of them would look stunning worn with my costumes. They are quite large but are attached to little hair clips. Is there anyway to get thick hair to co-operate with being decorated?Last edited by khadiya; 08-29-2008 at 10:24 AM.

I'll tell you if you show me where the cute things are on etsy ..g.:
This is how I do it, I have bought some really long kirby grips (go to a beauty supply place, and they sell them in big tubs), these match my hair colour so are 'invisible'. Put the Kirby in your hair at a 90 degree angle to where you wish to attach the cute clip from etsy. The cute clip should clip onto the Kirby so that together they form an X shape. If it is a really slippery or heavy cute clip, I put a second Kirby over the both other clips so it forms a sort of star shape.
I hope this works for you, let me know.

Here they are ..g.:
Etsy :: wildspirits :: WildSpirits in The Sun House
Just saw them and got thinking...
The Kirby grip thing sound like a good idea, though I'll add the caveat that they also have a tendency to 'float around on the surface' in my experience.
There's just so much damn hair for these things to compete with!
My thinking is that if a hair decoration looks unattached generally how much worse would that be if you are dancing and your hair is flying around all over the place?

I am in love with these!!
Instead of attaching them to loose hair, try something different like a side swept pony tail (as opposed to a SIDE PONYTAIL) and clip the side swept side or throw your hair up in a partial updo and clip the feather (ARRGHH those amazing feathers!!!) at the base of your updo.

Hands off - I saw them first!

I guess I'm being a bit lazy here. Taming the monster on top is a full time job as it is so I tend not to bother putting it up much except to pop it into a pony tail and ignore it and I usually perform dance with it down (only time I wear it down actually). I've just had to re-learn how to plait it (it used to be very short but I started growing it out a few years back).
I should probably make the effort to confront the whole putting my hair up thing.

Ok dumb question from the girl who only discovered hair and make-up in her late 20s:I am in love with these!!

What's the difference between a side swept pony tail and a side ponytail?

I learned only somewhat recently about well-placed bobby pins, and it has changed my updo life. Why did the other big-haired women in my life never tell me about these?!
So everyone in the world may know this, but just in case...bobby pins in an 'X'--play with placement, but I do them on the crown of my head, then high up on each side, towards the back of my head. Only then you can start using a regular or cute clip like a normal-haired person. :)
