    Silk types for circle skirts

I am a newby to purchasing silk and plan on getting a double-layer 25 yard skirt with cotton on top, and silk on bottom.

The website where I am ordering offers "silk," "raw silk," and "katan silk." They don't carry silk blends. I want something durable, and had a bad experience buying silk fabric once, as it rips so easily.

I also want an underskirt with some sheen, but not as synthetic-looking as polyester satin.

Any advice on which to order?

Silks is actually a very durable fiber. How it is spun and woven is the important thing. And unless you are getting what is sometimes called tissue silk, which is extreme thin and fine, it shouldn't rip easily.

Raw silk generally feels nubby. Many times it is hard to identify as silk by just looking at it. It is a favorite fabric of fabric artists. the threads are big. Think 200 threads per square inch.

China Silk is the most popular for belly dancers and costume making. But even then you need to check the weight. 5 - 6 mm is pretty standard for veils. 8 - 10 for skirts. This silk has a slight sheen to it and it crushes well. in other words assuming this is based on a circle skirt pattern, if you are looking for visible fullness on the bottom China Silk will give you less because is collapses into itself.

But, the heavier the silk the fuller the bottom.

have I made you cross eyed yet?

BTW - this really is a great question!

I was going to order the skirt ready made, and I didn't see China Silk as an option. The skirts listed as katan silk have a nice sheen and look durable, but I'm not sure if "katan" refers to the material or the design? :p
I would prefer a silk on the heavier side, but then again it's 25 yards, so it can't be too heavy... :)

The website is silvex.org, if anyone else is interested in silk skirts, or just looking at what I'm talking about. I've never used it before, but they have lovely stuff at amazing prices...

    Thanks for the info!

Katan silk is a silk used frequently in making saris. It is usually made up of two threads twisted together to make the thread which is woven. (okay, that is the fabric geek in me) what this means is that, depending on how heavy the threads are, you may or may not have a very heavy piece of silk.

One red flag about this particular website is that they do have knock offs of other peoples work. the pants are Melo knock offs. So I would just be careful ordering from them.

Any bhuzers know anything about this company?

As for Silvex, that's another topic about it: http://www.bhuz.com/forum/vendor-buy...ilvex-org.html

I have heard a lot of bad things about that vendor.

Uhhh..yeah...they make knock offs of my veils (I can show you original photos and how they photoshopped them to change them around ) and they knock off other good selling items like melos, i heard geisha moths..etc

I've ordered from Silvex before a long time ago, some of the kuchi jewelry was ok but at least 1/3 of the clothing items were defective in some way. It's one of those too good to be true websites. Save your hard earned cash and buy a real nice beauty from Flying Skirts
