    Salomakeup

OK, so, I've made my Maud Allan-esque headpiece (thank you, Joyce Trimmings, so much cheaper than M&J!), I have my spiral-bra costume and my seven veils of varying sizes (this is a vaudeville show, not an accurate bellydance show). I bought some very dark lipstick (MAC Cyber) and some gunmetal grey HIP eyeshadow. My question is...how do I put the eyeshadow on, all around my eyes, without looking like Ozzy Osbourne? I'm shooting for that kohl-rimmed look, but I'm not a makeup artist so I'm not sure how to do it right.

Also, do I need to go totally pale-faced for this? Rouge or no rouge?

    thanks in advance...

    - Leela

Wow, doing some research on makeup in the early 1900's. Women made their own makeup in their kitchens with toxic ingredients. The makeup created was to hide small pox scars and TB made most look sickly so that was all the rage - to look sickly white or pale. Victorians did not like the use of lipstick, instead the women kissed pink colored crepe paper for a little color. Lipstick did not become popular until the 1920's with the "bee sting" pursed lips.

With the eye shadow all around the eye, are you thinking about the Casati like eyes? About Casati

I love makeup history. If that is the case (looking like Casati), then Ozzy Osbourne is actually not too far off the mark, Flim Flam.

Be sure to rim the entire eye first with black eyeliner (cream, pencil, or liquid) and then smudge/blend the MAC shadow into it, using a smudger brush. I have this exact one in my kit and it's superb for this purpose.

Continue to layer/smudge/blend eyeliner and the shadow, always blending, until you get the effect you want.

Caveat: if you have small eyes, apply waterproof white/white-peach/white-gold/gold/or silver pencil (Urban Decay and Makeup Forever make great ones) to your waterline and then apply the liner and shadow underneath that.

    And then show us pictures!

Actually, no. TB makes you thin and breathless and gives you "hectic" colouring. Sparkling eyes, flushed cheeks, pale everywhere else. And TB was not then "desirable", though it was certainly "romantic". Actually *having* TB was akin to being HIV positive for most of the first half of the 20th century and before. It was a Very Bad Thing. My grandmother's parents died of it and she wouldn't actually *say* that was what it was, because of the stigma.

But the trick with Salome is sex and death. You don't want wholesome Victorian crepe-tinged lips (also, the Salome craze is really more Edwardian, not Victorian), you want exotic desirability that will probably kill you, but oh, what a death. Salome is like drugs, so she shouldn't look wholesome. Theda Bara is absolutely the queen of the look.

The smudger brush is absolutely your best friend!!! I find that an eye pencil works best as the base for these kinds of looks, as it will smear and smudge along with the powder and blend the best for that overall smoky look you are desiring. Don't be afraid that you look like Ozzy in the mirror, from stage it will be perfect.
