Best make up brands for everyday make up?
Hi all!
Im running out of my crappy Walgreens make up. I'm looking to upgrade. Any suggestions? There is a Macy's store out here and also an Ulta. Ive never been to one. Do they carry quality make up brands?

I second the love affair with bare minerals. I'm also a fan of two faces and benefit.

Re: Best make up brands for everyday make up?
Ahh one of my favorite topics. ( I'm a total makeup junkie)
I was a bare minerals fan but my face always had that android shiny look. (I have oily skin though) but on another thread someone suggested Everyday minerals and voila! no more plastic finish. It's because of the bismuth in bare minerals. Everyday minerals doesn't have it
Also Thanks to a couple bhuzzers who clued me in, you can even try a sample kit free. It's a really good deal. I think you only pay the $3 shipping fee. You can try two shades of foundation, one concealer and two blushes. Check it out. Everyday Minerals I am sold! Good luck
Oh and also found a good primer by Philosophy called "never let them see you shine." Good luch

There is an Excellent thread on make-up here: Ju-Ju-Be.com :: View topic - Makeup Questions for Kristi
Look for the posts from "calilou". Start on page 2.
BTW - Kristi was a manager at Sephora and now occasionally does freelance artistry.Last edited by beki; 09-13-2008 at 01:32 PM.

Ulta is awesome.
If you're looking to get good makeup on a budget, the Sally Hansen Natural Beauty inspired by Carmindy line is some great stuff! I do love BareEscentuals, as well.

Most of my daytime makeup is from mark (meetmark.com) but I love jane's mineral gel eyeliner too (it kicks smashbox's butt!)
I'm addicted to the reviews at makeupalley.com, I can't make a purchase now without checking there first! ..l;,

Re: Best make up brands for everyday make up?
I use the same products as I use for performing, pretty much, ie my trusty MAC Russian Red lipstick and a few other shades. I adore MAC lipsticks. (Except for MAC Red. It's glossier and not as rich.)
I find I have more need of foundation during the day now (bah) and I still really like good old Mary Kay. The shade is perfect, not too yellow, not too pink, the texture is nice, it goes on easily and works really well for me.

Ulta is like Sephora only with drugstore brands as well.
I'm a huge fan of Stila and Urban Decay, both which I believe are sold at Ulta. Urban Decay has a rep for glittery eyeshadows, but they also have some good shimmers and mattes, too.
I don't know if Macy's sells it, but Laura Mercier makes nice foundations.

I use Aveda for every day. I like their dual foundation, which can be applied dry or wet depending on how much coverage you want.
I used to use Bare Minerals. It looked great for about ten minutes after I put it on, but it seemed to sink into every nook and cranny on my face and gave me wrinkles I don't have. My mother is an addict and claimed that I was applying it wrong. I applied every way possible and still the same results. Other people love it. I'm just reporting my results.

Rachel i had the same problem with bare minerals and similar brush on stuff..maybe because its humid here but it seems the powder would settle in strange places..i do like it as a top coat and use in on cheeks and forehead, t zone but around the eyes i found it to be something that settled into the wrinkles

Jessenia,
I live in a fairly humid climate (at least in the summer), so maybe that had something to do with it. Either way, I'm glad that I'm not crazy in noticing that, as my mother seems to imply.

I like really light feeling foundation with sunscreen and the best I've found is Origins Nude and Improved foundation. For color, I really like MAC. Maybelline mascara is the best. Also Benefit foundation faker is pretty cool for quick light coverage. It just depends on what type of coverage you are looking for...I could go on and on with suggestions....
I love makeup!

I love Mac - such great eyeshadow and blush colours for the price. For foundation & mascara I always splurge on Dior, Chanel and Armani, but gloss is a good place to economise - I like Bourjois (they also do good shadows and blush if you're on a budget).

Re: Best make up brands for everyday make up?
For women of color, I am totally digging Nacara cosmetics..
Now that we're coming into colder weather, I tend to switch from mineral to something more moisturising and I'd been looking for the perfect consistency foundation that is neither too wet nor too dry.
I started using the Cream Powder Foundation and I absolutely love it. Starts out as a cream and then dries to a powdery/silicone feeling consistency. I set it with a light dusting of Logona Loose Powder (also my favorite brand for everyday organic eyeliner) and it feels very lightweight.
The range of colors for foundation and lipstick is very rich. Especially good for skins of Mediterranean, Arab, Latina, SE Asian, and African origins.

Re: Best make up brands for everyday make up?
Bare Minerals #1!!! It's all I ever wear. You can really stretch your makeup budget because it can be adapted easily for stage, too.
They sell it at Ulta. If you want to try before you buy, I suggest visiting a Bare Escentuals boutique and getting a free "make under" (what they call a "make over", since you're not covering up your skin, you're bringing out its natural beauty). I have visited the BE boutique on the Magnificent Mile and they were very friendly and helpful there.
You can get a makeunder at Ulta, but any given salesperson there may or may not be trained well in the optimal use of the minerals. There's a technique to getting them to look good. Most people that complain about the foundation probably aren't applying it with firm enough pressure. My best friend, an esthetician, made an excellent photo tutorial to explain how to "put your face on" with Bare Minerals.
