    tips for fine hair?

I have fairly fine straight blonde hair, a bit past my shoulders. Nice and shiny, but about as flat as you can get and likes to get stuck to my face if I am dancing without some pretty hair clip. Any magic potions for remedying this? Anybody with this same plight? Clips help but if I have no gel or whatever in my hair, they go sliding out. I use mousse and gel and all that, but my hair deflates after a bit. I have a curling iron but am completely inept at using it myself and way too much work I think for others to use it one me. I would love to have some bounce and wave and thought about using hot rollers or just rollers period, but I can't figure out how to put them in? Any suggestions??

    Re: tips for fine hair?

Sounds like we have the same hair! I do have a clip-on curly ponytail, but like the look of my own hair better. My solution is to set my hair for every performance. I spritz the bottom few inches of my hair to barely dampen it, then roll it up with foam rollers (Goody Pillow Soft Rollers). If I do this about 3-4 hours before I plan to take them out, I have nice curls that last through a 20-minute set. Sometimes I will use a blow drier on them once during that time for a few minutes to make sure the damp sections dry. Of course, if it's particularly hot and humid, the curls might fade a little as I'm dancing (and therefore sweating, oh, I mean glowing) - especially the ends if they encounter my "glistening" back. This is HOURS after I did my hair and danced, then decided to take some photos outside in humid Virginia (basically worst case scenario, and I still have some nice waves): http://www.kiyaana.com/images/gallery1/card.jpg

So far I have only used mousse and hairspray for products, but still need to try the Bumble & Bumble product that Azhia recommended.

When I use hot rollers, the curls just don't last like they do with the damp ends + pillow soft rollers.

Thank goodness...I've been wondering this same sort of thing myself! I like the color (dark blond) of my hair, and the silky-softness that comes with having fine hair, but when it gets right down to it, it's very flat and you can't *do* much with it (not without a gallon of hairspray, anyway), so you just have to hope it decides to cooperate!

For performances, I've taken to using a hairpiece (clip-on ponytail) that matches my real hair color so well that my own mother asked me if it was my real hair (obviously I don't visit home enough, but that's another story). I've danced with it a couple of times and I love it, because it only takes 4 minutes for me to get my hair ready. Brushing it back into a sleek ponytail, I simply clip the fake on over the top of my real pony -- and no one is the wiser.

I've bought a product called 'bump its' which work...they give you some lift at the crown but you do have to backcomb a little if your hair is very very very fine otherwise you'll see the bumpits through the hair if you aren't careful.

A lot of hairspray and supersized rollers work for some people. Keep in mind you must wash it out the same night.

Kiyaana, I think I recognize you--you've come up from VA to do our show (Latifa's hafla) in Millersville haven't you? I've seen your ponytail and wondered whether it was your real hair! Beautiful dancing too! I hope you are who I think you are :) Thanks for the roller tips, they look easier to handle. I too glow--ALOT--something that isn't hidden by mounds of wavy bouncy hair!

I checked out the bumpits website--it is like getting a beehive for those of us without the amount of hair! I thought it was pretty funny that it tells you that bumpits are not edible in the instruction section..l;, Thanks for the hair thread too. Any hair spray recommendations by the way?

Yes, I remember you! I came up twice for Latifa's show at Hellas. It's happening again next weekend, right? I can't make it, but I highly recommend it for anyone else in the area reading this. You all do such a nice job.

Thanks for the nice comments. ..g.: I have done duets several times with a dance-mate who has lots of long hair, so the ponytail is my way of trying not to look so hair-pathetic next to her!!!! I do plan to find a 3/4 fall that matches for extreme heat/humidity conditions, just need to get to work on that.

Aw thanks! We have fun. Yep, this upcoming weekend Sept 20th! And it would be great to see you when you are able to make it sometime! I love that, hair pathetic ..l;, My husband has this thick wavy beautiful chestnut brown hair and I often feel a little hair pathetic next to him. It isn't long long, but it grows in fast and thick that he needs a haircut practically the day after he gets it cut! He is very proud of that mane--I think it is his only source of vanity. What it would be like long and on a girl...

I too have straight long hair that refuses to keep a curl from regular irons or hot rollers. What I found that works for me is a Vidal Sasson VS184C Gold Series Professional Three-Barrel Waver. It's kinda like the old hair crimpers from the 80s but makes nice waves in the hair. Here's a pic of my hair from the Midwest Bellydance Challenge. It held up even with all that heat and humididty. Anywho, it's takes about 30 minutes to do my whole head but the curl lasts all day when everything else lasts about an hour. Sometimes my hair is still wavy the next day.
    Hope this helps!
    Good Luck!

I have long, straight fine hair, so I feel your pain. When I want my hair to have extra body, I blow dry it rather than letting it air dry. If I want some soft waves and extra body, I use hot rollers.

I too have been trying to figure out what to do with my baby fine hair. I have come the conclusion that I need a clip or a some kind of headband to keep my hair out of my face if I'm going to wear it down. Fortunately, headbands are in, so now's the time to buy. You might also experiment with some up-dos, they can be really beautiful and flattering, too.

In addition to hot rollers, I've found simply wearing my hair up in a ballerina-style bun during the day gives my hair great body and it holds pretty well during a set.

    Re: tips for fine hair?

I typically will blow dry my hair to get extra volume (along with potions to try to keep it looking all full) and normally my hair goes into a bun during the day most of the time, but the pretty waves I get from a bun don't really last, even if I've shallacked the heck out of my hair before. This is a technique I've used before in a pinch if I can't or don't have time to blow dry. I find headbands are nice if they fit--but I have a small head so most of them don't! Any recommendations for hot rollers if I ever go down that route? I think I might try the goody soft rollers first, they seem a little more idiot proof to me and don't involve hot things near my scalp. But if I were to put scalding hot things near my scalp, I'd at least want them bhuzzer approved!

    I wear a wig. ..l;,

It's a short black bob that I got for Halloween maybe 9 years ago for $10, I think? So inexpensive and yet SO many people think it is my hair!!! Also, because it is short and a full wig, I have no qualms about doing head spins and the like. However, I am saving up for a proper long-haired-wig. I would love my own long hair but frankly, my hair is just too lazy- it won't grow very long and it definitely won't hold anything, not even Church Hair. ..l;,

If you have the time, avoid hot things near the scalp altogether and do pincurls! They're the strongest and longest-lasting (a tut is on the dvd). Somehow we manage to keep those gorgeous sparkly barrettes in your hair, eh?

I have super fine, long, thin hair and I find that the only thing that works for any amount of time is getting it wet and letting it dry the way that I want it. Heat processing does nothing to it. I can take hot rollers out (even with product) and you would never know I had them in my hair. I use the old fashioned pink sponge rollers that my mom gave me when I was little. I just sleep in them. I still use a little product although I can use much because then it looks like I didn't bother to wash my hair at all.

I highly recommend a Helix haircut. Here's the website so you can see if there's a stylist near you Helix Hair Academy. They use a special pair of scissors and take microscopic pieces from your hair. It's kind of scary at first because it looks like they are just going to start hacking your hair. It creates barbs which will catch on the other hairs. Doing this makes your hair fluff up and stay that way. I've had it done twice, but the only person in my area who did it has moved so I haven't had one in at least five years. ..cr.: It was like magic, though.

Cool! I actually tried pincurls last night and they kind of worked! I think I need to let them set much much longer in order to be really effective, but when I first took them out I had curly floofy hair. It did deflate, but not as much as usual, giving me a kind of been at the seashore wavy hair look. Much safer than handling a hot iron!

Clip on ponytail, and a clip on curly bun type fake hair has solved this problem for me. It's so easy and I actually look put together now. Before, I had the costume bling, make-up, and dead limp hair.
