Looking into a (Swarovski)crystal
What do you see as a trend in the latest cabaret costuming?
Do you see the demise of the pared down lycra?
How funky is costuming?
What's going on in Egypt?
USA trend-setting?
What will never fade-away?
Evidence or just guesswork..what will we see coming up on the back of belly dancers?

Re: Looking into a (Swarovski)crystal
Darn, I thought I'd learn about a new source for rhinestones....w.:
As a fashion-impaired dancer, I have no idea what's coming up...but I'd be glad if the tight skirts went away. Not so good on my (ahem) generous outer thighs...

Re: Looking into a (Swarovski)crystal
I'm not sure I see the lycra going away, but I think we'll see the cuts become a little more flattering and see more mixing of fabrics for texture contrast.
I do feel costuming will definitely get a little funkier. The classic look is always going to be a standard, but minis are becoming more common and designers seem to be incorporating color combinations and some runway trends into costuming.
I think dresses are becoming more popular at the moment, which I like since it's an easy way to costume a variety of body types unless you do the new sheer with shorts thing, but that's just one style.
From what I've seen in my area, although it may just be due to GA's general tribal-heavy scene, there's a trend towards tribaret style costuming. Many tribal fusion dancers are incorporating sparkles and sequins while cabaret dancers, possibly trying to distinguish themselves from the nipple-tassel twirlers in the turkish airport specials, are looking for costuming that has a more earthy/vintage feel if they don't go for ultra-modern Egyptian costumes.
I don't think the super full circle skirt and bedlah w/ fringe combo will ever go away. To most of the GP, that's the look that says "bellydancer" in a way something like a sleek lycra number never will, so it'll never disappear because of market demands.
I've also noticed (and maybe it's just because I'm getting into it now) that making your own costumes is making a comeback. When I started dancing, it seems like everyone bought cabaret costuming and only a few souls were brave enough to try making their own (or they had just been dancing long enough to remember when everyone always made their own). I think with more availability of materials through the internet (i.e. -premade fringe and crystals in bulk) as well as the rising cost of costumes that are becoming more minimalist, more people are dusting off their sewing kits and pulling out full costumes that are in many cases, just as fabulous or even more so than many one would purchase from designers.

Re: Looking into a (Swarovski)crystal
In my view the very minimalistic costumes are beginning to become a bit old-hat now. Lycra costumes are still popular, but more embellished around the hips, very long fringe still not in vogue. High-end homemades and one offs are increasing in popularity, and I have noticed unusual bedlahs and more versatile combination costumes making a comeback.
Also I have noticed people around me are beginning to shy away from Bella's a bit more, although they are mostly unique, they still have a definite 'look' that is getting too distinctive for some. I also notice some are getting bored with the cupcake style bra (sahar etc) as they only work well on small boobies.
I have also noticed more sparkly-tribal costumes appearing, and there is definitely a more funky vibe, with unusual fashion influenced skirts.
There are also a lot more 'Latin-influenced' costumes, I think this has a lot to do with ballroom dancing becoming popular again, and overlap of fusion styles.
Also vintage-glam/retro, gothic and dresses are getting increasingly desirable.

I think with the economy the way it's going, the minimal dress for maximum cash is going to go down
I think that more bling/fabric/etc for the buck is going to be the trend, no matter what form it takes

Pants, Like SummerSahars from BDFD3 I could see them with awsome cut outs, I also hope the minimalist looks GOES FAR away I dont like it, but the melo style pants blinged up would be awsome!

I suspect that in an age of monetary restraint the opposite will happen in show-biz. Escapism was popular in 1920s and 30s and I can well imagine costumes going really showy. My equation might be really dodgy of course!!!

I think that you are probably on the money with this one. Its not quite costumes but at work we are currently finding that the trend for book covers is to retain many elements of clean, modern design but with a strong nod to either:I suspect that in an age of monetary restraint the opposite will happen in show-biz. a) a retro/vintage feel (harking back the the 'good old days')
or b) a sense of escapist fun, with the emphasis on the 'feel good factor'

Re: Looking into a (Swarovski)crystal
I anticipate a 60s retro revival, but I have a feeling it might happen in the tribal/tribal fusion field rather than orientale. They're already halfway there. With the orientale crowd, I would imagine Egypt will continue to set the trends but it all depends - given the state of the US economy, if there was a US designer producing the "right" look dancers might want to go for her work instead, keeping their money local. I do get the impression people will go with the trends rather than personal taste sometimes.
You are probably right on the opulence. World NZ just showed a $30,000 tuxedo studded with Swarovski crystals, head to foot.
