Everday Smokey Eye
I'm messing around with new products and thought I'd share some nuggets with regard to everyday smokey eyes.
I was actually experimenting with making my lashes longer for everyday wear w/o the use of false eye lashes.
I thought if I minimized the top line of black, it would allow my tiny lashes, once curled and mascara'd, to show up a bit more. It kind of worked.
I also used a color wash + eyeliner in the water line + smudging techniques (ohhhh yes, it's all explained, don't worry! Just a few weeks now!!
) to create an everyday smokey eye.
As I was discussing with a fellow Bhuzizzle, I think anyone and I mean, anyone, can get away with a smokey eye, given they use the proper color and technique.
What I also wish to point out is that this application does not look so intense. To me, anyways. Which is why I think it's an "everyday" smokey eye.
When I look at it w/o the aid of a camera, however, it seems like a TON of eye makeup. And this is quite a close up shot as well. So for those needing to beef up and intensify their eyes for the stage, please keep mind that you really do need to almost look like a football player/raccoon for the eyes to really pop out from the stage or in front of the camera.
[And if you're in Portland, OR on Oct. 22nd, please sign up for the makeup workshop! I keep it very hands on! You'll be able to do this!]

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
What are you talkin' about girlfriend?!

It's that new foundation I've been raving about! ..l;,
I had such horrible acne on my face and back/chest, I hadn't touched my face or body there in years! So I have lots of acne scars that are just covered up nicely.
Totally off topic, I took a tour of my partner's new office building and they have this really nice galley kitchen. They had 2 crock pots! I totally thought of you!

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
Azhia,
Girl you know I'm all over this. I have a ton of smokey hues by make up forever and mac. will play today. Two questions though:
1. What is the color wash by MAC and where did you appy it?
2. When lining the waterline, the link you gave said to only line the part closest to the lashes and not the part that touches the eye. How do you do that?!! Whenever I line my innner eye rim it's gone in 20 minutes, so I'm thinking that by lining just the part that touches the lashes may help it stay put longer. I've always used eyeliner pencil, is there another technique?

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
Woops forgot to add a #3
I have Large eyes and more of a padded lid that a defined crease, should I still pull the smokey hue into the crease or just keep it strictly on the lid?
And when are you coming to Seattle??????

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
Color wash is a technique whereby you apply the same shade on the entire lid (DVD technique #16). There is no crease application, per se, which should answer your #1 & #3!
Yes, the waterline is still the thin rim of skin above the lash, abutted against the eyeball. Waterproof eyeliner pencil. Pencil is probably the safest thing to put in that area. Makeup Forever and Urban Decay both have excellent waterproof liner pencils. #2!
Lastly: whenever someone invites me up there! ..g.: Cassie and I will be in San Fran. So it is not outside of the realm of possibility to have a RAq the Camera (or just me) up there. My good friend, Amira Patricia is now in Vancouver so that is 2 pitstops right there!

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
To everyone within driving distance of Azhia's upcoming makeup workshop. Take it. She is AWSOME! We miss her very much from Philly to D.C.
Hi Azhia, i have been really experimenting with the smoky eye and very bold, bright colors. i'm trying to make you proud girl!!!
one problem, i sweat like a wilderbeast. i start out looking like a sexy raccoon and end up with a not so sexy zombie effect. i've taking to using milk of magnesia for every performance and only lining the upper water line. i don't even take the liner into the inner corner, just 3/4 of the way. i started doing that because my eyes will sometimes start to burn.
at the marrakesh there are 5 rooms and i will usually do 2, sometimes 3 songs per room, one right after the other. is there any way to make my face last for 40-60 minutes of dancing?
BTW i've gotten a lot of nice comments on my overall apearance since i started doing my makeup with you in mind.
thank you.

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
I love you, Julia! Let's have ice cream together next time I'm in town. NOT. ..l;, OK, something healthier... .p::
I'm experimenting with some new barrier/fixative/primer products. Mehron makes a Barrier/Fixative spray that is supposed to be pretty effective against perspiration.
I'm bringing something similar with me on my travels next month, Green Marble Sealer. Scarily, it is comprised of mostly alcohol and acrylic resin, but the special effects industry uses it heavily to guard against allergic reactions to all the latex used for FX.
So try Mehron or Krylan fixative sprays underneath and on top of makeup. Be very careful with it around the eyes.
Some folks also swear by Benefit's "She-Lac."
Additionally, try the waterproof eyeliners + eye shadow, which have better staying power than liquid or cake eyeliner, and be sure to set everything with powder (eyeliner set with eye shadow, etc.).
Nafiah, I would love to meet you and you can definitely do this!! I have faith!!

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
Now you haz me curious, girlene! Do you address mitigating acne scarring in your makeup dvd? Because that's been an issue for me for years. I've learned to apply liquid foundation with a sponge, because, well, it just works better. Or else the mineral stuff gives decent coverage. But maybe you have some tricks I don't know about? (Other than lighting, which we don't have much control over.)

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
Taj, you mean covering acne scars or mitigating their actual occurrence? There is a section on the DVD on how to cover scars, tattoos, and discoloration, if that helps! As far as mitigating their occurrence, don't pop them or irritate them!

(I also prefer sponge application of liquid foundation over a brush or fingers.)

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
Right, I meant covering them. Now that I've reached my 50s, I don't get zits much anymore.
The deep scars are really very trying, and there really isn't much you can do about them, it seems. I had a Clinique makeup person (I wouldn't call her an artist) apply foundation on me once and she essentially passed over the pockmarks (what a lovely word), leaving me with a very holey-looking face. Yeesh, even I could do better than that.

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
Gotcha. I know exactly what you mean about the scarring. I think you can see mine in the DVD; hey, I'm human, but I'm glad I don't get acne anymore, cystic or otherwise.
Try products with silicone, which is a good "spackle" (not sexy, but it does the job!). Or super pigmented concealer that has a lot of emolliency so as not to appear dry.
Temptu has a nice concealer wheel that I use, though it has a limited palette, in my opinion. I love the consistency, though, on skins that I can match to it.
Joe Blasco's Highlights might also be a good choice.Last edited by Azhia; 09-21-2008 at 10:43 AM.

Re: Everday Smokey Eye
Let's totally set one up next time I'm in Philly! Where in NY are you?
The DVD preeeetty much covers it. I don't get into the specifics of the products themselves, and I briefly touch upon the tools in the PDF booklet.
The focus are the techniques, so once you do find a product that works (for which I am happy to make suggestions) the dvd presents how to apply them. I really like to leave it up to people to determine what works for them.
Consistency and effectiveness is highly variable and I don't think I can hand down adequate judgments on specific products without having worked specifically with somebody. Plus, I think that experimentation helps people become more in tune with their features and empowers them to make educated decisions.
