Help with doing dark, smoky eyes!

This is maybe a weird problem to have, dumb question, whatever. Here goes. Not a technique problem so much as working with my natural looks, so maybe there's no hope for me.

(For sake of being honest, I'll admit I'm not a dancer yet--still looking for a teacher--but adore the dark eye makeup look so this is also for everyday)

My looks just don't "fit" the dark eye makeup look. For one, I look like I'm in high school (I'm actually 25, and yes, I know I'll appreciate it when I'm 50 but it's no good now when I want people to take me seriously). My eyes are dark but my hair is sort of honey-blond/light brown. My skin is on the pale side. There is nothing exotic-looking about me; rather I look like a dumb, naive, 17-year-old choir girl (I wish I were kidding about that, but it's true). You can see why dark eye makeup might look a little funny on me. I can make it work for everyday (with mixed results--a lot of people like it, as do I--brings out the darkness of my eyes--but my mom always complains that I look "goth" [it's nowhere near goth looking] and that I have "black gunk smeared around my eyes" or look like a raccoon), and like to play with colors, but I have to watch how much I use, because wearing a lot of dark makeup doesn't make me look exotic or goth-y, but more like those stereotypical "trailer-trash" type teenage girls--think the Olsen Twins rather than Janet Jackson or something.

I hate this. When my partner's brother's cheerleader girlfriend can pull off the goth look better than I can, you can imagine why it makes me want to cry, lol!

There has to be some trick for us "wholesome" types for wearing dark makeup and smoky eyes without looking like we're headed for our job walking the street corner or like we're goth wannabes. I know most peoples' advice would be to stick to lightweight eye makeup but I don't want to play up the young and stupid look, and pretty pastel colors aren't "me." I see pictures of so many of you wearing dark eye makeup and looking awesome, and I just can't be the only one who naturally looks more like she should be at church youth group than belly dance class!

ETA: Oh yes, and I wear glasses, if that makes a difference, though they don't do any weird optical stuff to my eyes like making them look bigger or smaller, and I don't want to get contacts. The only way my glasses really affect my eye makeup is that I have to pretty much have my nose touching the mirror to see what I'm doing when applying!

Here's a suggestion: do the smoky eye, but with different colors. Instead of black or grey, try blues, greens, or plums. Even browns or bronzes work well. That way, you get the effect of smokiness and drama, but the colors won't look as goth.
