Thread: skirt with pick ups

Anyone ever made a skirt with pick ups? They're getting really popular on bridal dresses and thought it would be cute at the bottom of a skirt. Any helpful hints?

They arent too hard to do... the problem is, that they dont flow very well, so if you are doing this in a BD costume, your skirt might end up looking stiff.

I actually bought a pattern to do it because I saw one of Joe's designs on PR that had a lot of little pinups in a skirt that flowed quite well. You won't get the stiffer bridal gown effect, but it would look cool. I'm thinking of trying it as an accent to the bottom of a mermaid skirt or something like you mentioned instead of over the entire skirt.

So would you suggest an inner lining to set the pins in? Seems like most of what Ive read for gowns says to have an inner lining.

Yea, I agree over the whole skirt may lose the effect we're after. McCalls has a couple patterns and Hobby Lobby has them for 99 cents! Off to the store I go LOL.

Yea, I could see where it may look stiff, especially depending on what fabric you use. I have a cream lycra that I wanted to make fitted at the top getting a little looser on the way down and do the pin ups just around the last 12 or so inches at the bottom.

I think that might look beautiful. It won't be the same as the dress, but I think it'll be a cool effect. :)
