Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
So here I am, got up this am, just fine after weekend of long performance at festival, tons of rehearsals, really hard Monday night bd class and last night square dance class. I was fine then as I started about my day at work (executive assistant - not too physical) my right hip just starting hurting, bad, like it had been hit, HARD,with a big ol' sledge hammer. I have been icing all day, took Exedrin but it's not helping much so I'm leaving to go home and LIE DOWN ON OTHER SIDE.
If it doesn't get better by tomorrow, I'm staying home and seeing doctor but I've never had anything like this before and the pain is NOT muscular that much I can tell, it's deep joint pain...........cr.:..cr.:.w.:..cr.:..cr.:
Anyone else had an "attack" like this for no discernible reason? I don't have osteo (on HRT for years) take glucosamine/chondroitin and can't figure out why this is happening............................*sigh* only 45 more minutes before hubby can pick me up in car and take me home, home where the lovely Vicodan pills are. .w.:,s::.w.:

I'm a massage therapist and I know some people get that type of pain from a muscle deep in the buttocks, the piriformis, that goes into spasm. I'm not diagnosing just giving you info.

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
I has a periformus muscle in spasm a couple of weeks ago (don't ask me how I did it, it wasn't bellydancing!!)
The pain set in gradually, while I was doing nothing, and quickly became so bad that I couldn't stand to drive, or even sit. The pain radiated from deep inside the hip joint up into my lower back on that side, and down the back of the thigh as well.
If that sounds like yours, you may benefit from massage. I went to see my myotherapist (trigger point massage) and she fixed me right up, in fact I went dancing later that night!

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
that sounds exactly like what happened to me last night...it's still QUITE sore and was really hard to sleep. I got called the Old Lady last night because I could barely roll over...I think mine was from a combo of wearing heels all day, running around, and then getting up from reading in bed funny in an odd unaligned day

I totally get it. I'm gonna start stretching first if I can.

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
After a round of doctors and xrays and mris, a physical therapist finally diagnosed a stretched IT band; it runs from the Ileus to the Tibia (thus the intitials) and can cause pain from what feels to be the buttocks down to the lower leg. It's a strain, and what it really needs is about 6 weeks of nothing. Not gonna happen in my life!
Barring that, gentle stretches, heating pads, and aleve help.
A side note: the MRI and Xray both showed a certain amount of arthritis in the joint. While one Dr. was willing to just diagnose arthritis as causing the pain, the rehab physician (who sent me to the physical therapist) felt that anyone in her late 40s probably has that amount of degeneration-and it shouldn't cause that amount of pain. Moral of this story: you know your body best. Find someone that will work WITH you, not try and put you into a box.

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
Hi Mish Mish! Sorry I didn't get to meet you - yeah, Fog Fest is a tough gig - we do an hour show, no restrooms (except portapottys - tough to deal with in costume
) no dressing rooms so we have to arrive in full costume and makeup after trekking through entire Fog Fest from faaaaar awaaaay street parking. The stage sways as we dance, is raised about four feet off this grassy hill with only a bar at back so have to be REAL careful about getting close to edge. But the organizers keep hiring us becasue we have a live band as well as taped music and different styles of what I'll call "regional" for lack of a more correct term, we are not exactly folkloric but I do Egyptian cane duet and we do Zambramora and there's some nightclub style routines.
Anyway, I went to chiropracter yesterday and he says the hip is hurting becuase: drum roll here, I've got sacrum problems affecting nerves that go out and around hip. He did adjustments and heat packs and I went home able to walk better but I felt like hamburger. He's actually the best chiropractor I've ever used and I have been to about four. Anyhoo, once home it was "flat on back, alternating ice and heat packs 20 mins. at a time, no excessing sitting or standing". No dance last night but he ok'd Saturday workshop as long as I don't overdo it.
How I got this "sacrum" problem I don't know, but carrying my heavy gig bag through 1/3 mile of Fog Fest to get to our stage is one thought that comes to mind - plus rehearsing really hard and often the two months before. He is having me do lots of stretching at work because it is still *not very comfy* when sitting and I have a desk job.............w.:..cr.:.w.:
Anyhoo, he ruled out "degenerative hip joint disease" which I was positively convinced I had because never in this kind of pain that came on so suddenly - he says vigorous exercise followed by prolonged sitting the next day can cause spine and muscles around it to stiffen and whamo! Degenerative hip disease comes on over a period of time, not suddenly, even though everyone gets some joint stiffness as time goes on, that's normal wear and tear.
I'm at least calmer - I thought for sure my "wheels were falling off" and I'd never shimmy again, but funny thing is, I can move my hips up and down and shimmy them anyway I want, it's sitting and then walking where I turn into "Igor" and lurch forward dragging right leg. Hmmmm, maybe this could be a new belly dance step, "Basic Egyptian Lurch"...c::

You are right, he told me a certain amount of arithris in joint is normal but shouldn't cause this level of pain and problems. My pain was not down the buttock, it was simply the right hip and aching down the thigh -like someone had snuck up on me lugged my hip with a sledge hammer! I've had sciatica before with shooting pains from lower back down buttocks to back of knees, but this is different; pain is on the side of one hip. I couldn't feel any discomfort in lower back until he touched it - I was so overwhelmed with hip pain. It's a lot better today and I'm getting up and walking around every 30 minutes and stretching . Not getting a lot done here at work but hey, it's not busy anyway.

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
I go to a chiropracter that is gentle but he addresses things. I haven't been in about 18 months because haven't needed to - but with the strains we've had in the past year with serious illness and or death of 3 close relatives have taken a toll. Now that things have settled down, seems like body is saying "oh yeah, well guess what, I need attention too". The hubbs got a flareup of his gout which he hasn't in years that made his knee swell up to alarming porportions, was actually hot to the touch and red! ..cr.: and one of the triggers for gout is stress. Added to that, he still had to climb three flights of stairs at school where he teaches and the new administration refused to issue him an elevator key even though he was obviosly limping. Isn't that pathetic? I would have smiled and said, "then call in a temp, I'm going home since you won't accommodate a reasonable request". But being the stoic (or stupid) guy he is, my hubby just got himself up the 3 flights of stairs somehow and although it took a week, the swelling is now gone.
Sheesh, ain't stress a kick!

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
Nisima, the symptoms sound like an angry IT band. The other option that comes to mind might be bursitis in the hip joint - I've had that in the past, and it can be pretty horrid.
You're already icing, which is good. You could try pulse therapy - first ice, for 30-60 minutes, then heat for 30-60 minutes, then ice, then heat, etc.
You might want to experiment rotating between aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin), and naproxen (Alleve), because you may find that one of them gives better pain relief than the others. I personally find naproxen to be the most effective of the three.
When I get an angry muscle, I like to calm it using a product called "Magical Muscle Oil" from a company called "Little Moon Essentials". My local health food store used to carry it, as well as bath salts from the same company. They no longer stock it in on the shelves, but because they still sell Little Moon bath salts they can special-order it for me. Or, try getting either some arnica cream or some capsaicin cream (both are in Magical Muscle Oil) and rub that on the sore area.

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
FYI I woke up one time with both of my hip joints on fire. Horrible, horrible pain. Not in the muscles or other tissues, but deep in the actual joint itself. Nothing OTC would touch it. No position provided any relief. Couldn't sleep. Thought something horrible had happened and that I'd never walk, let alone dance, ever again. It ended up being a viral infection in my hip joints of all things. The meds the doc gave me did wonders (considering the pain level). Boy, but talk about being able to pinpoint *exactly* where your hip joint actually and truly is...

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
Wow, no kidding, how awful and trust me if the chiropractor hadn't been able to ease my pain, my next step would have been straight to an orthopedic guy for x-rays, MRI you name it. Even Vicodan double dose didn't do much for my pain the first day and night were terrible and I mean awful pain level. I could barely rest let alone sleep!!! It is interesting how experiences like this really put things into perspective, one day being worried about "getting" a complex choreo for troupe and the next worried about even being able to walk. I was positive I would need a hip replacement immediately, the pain was that bad. And I have heard of people getting viral infections in joints or even in bones and it's serious stuff.
Take care of you and thanks for posting.,..g.:

Re: Owwwwwwww! Right hip killing me! Help!
Yikes, you ladies are scaring me! I have had pain in one hip for a few months now, but I'm afraid of seeing the doctor because I'm afraid he'll say I can't dance or workout or tell me something terrible. I do remember one big "owie" moment during a pilates move and that was followed by hours and hours of workshops, but I have taken more than a few weeks easy now. :(
I have had issues with my sacroiliac joint that required PT when I was pregnant a few years ago and I've had sciatica, but this is not the same thing.
