Thread: I (heart) my Sonicare toothbrush!

My dental discussion with Joanne today reminded me, I've been meaning to post this.

About a month ago, I got a Sonicare toothbrush. I wish I'd done it years ago.

Every time I brush, my teeth feel like I just came from the dentist's office! I still floss, of course, but the flossing is less....er....obviously productive .w.: than it used to be, which tells me this thing is doing a great job between teeth.

And I think my teeth are somewhat whiter. My teeth will never be pure white for a lot of reasons I won't detail here, but they're most definitely shinier.

If you've thought of getting one, I say go for it!

Me too and my on/off button totally broke (it started cracked and then it just pushed right into the body of the toothbrush) so I'm using a stupid regular brush. I <heart> my sonicare, too!

I've had a sonicare toothbrush for at least seven years and they really are wonderful. I don't always take it when I travel, and I can't stand brushing with a regular brush on the road.

Wait till your first cleaning - it makes such a difference in terms of time and amount of scraping. My cleanings take just a few minutes.

I am a major fan.

I had braces for the second time in my life as an adult, I've been lucky never to have had a single cavity..........and I made it through braces, again, without one, cause of the Sonicare!

Yep, total believer, everyone should invest in one, and see the dentist every 6 months

since I have a certain heart condition, I can't use the Sonicare, but I use the Oral B Velocity (about $20 at Target) and am in love with it....I'm actually grumpy in the morning if I can't use it. That plus Crest ProHealth toothpaste is definitely the key to the dentist-after feeling...

I have my eye on a Oral B Triumph 9400. But first I need to come up with the $$. But first I need to go to the dentist, and I don't have the money for that yet either.

I use a battery-powered Oral-B - cost $13 from Target. Key feature is the one minute timer, best used twice for a total of 2 min. Another key feature is that Oral-B makes brush heads available in "extra soft". Anyone that has an Oral-B, use it tooth by tooth, just like when the hygienist polishes your teeth. It's a bit different from how you'd use a sonicare or regular tb. Got the Triumph for my husband.

What is the difference between the Sonicare and the Triumph? I know that the Triumph's are expensive.

I personally have a Sonicare and love it as well.

For the budget conscious, I think I heard a TV news study that the Oral B cheapie was pretty close in cleaning and a dollar-for-dollar better buy. The TV stations have been doing alot of cost cutting segments due to the economy.

Good dental cleaning & health limits inflamation. Inflamation, apparently, is damaging to the body and can contribute to (or possibly cause) other conditions. It's amazing how the body acts as a unit. That's my general understanding from a talk my dentist had with me.

I just looked on eBay, and there are different Sonicare's for different prices. I'm in the market for a new toothbrush so recommendations would be helpful. (And not too expensive, either!)

My wife and I have been using one for at least 10 years. The difference between a sonicare and a regular toothbrush is astounding! I used to have all kinds of gum problems - not anymore!

Oh, sorry! The TV news consumer blurb was for an Oral B battery powered one vs. the Sonicare. They DID say that the Sonicare was better. I got the impression it was like 80 85% vs. 100%.

Since this thread came up I've been checking out the Sonicare prices in the stores & on E-bay. I'd love to get one, but they're so outrageously expensive, considering I've been unemployed for a year. I've been using the Crest Spinbrush (battery powered) for several years now. If the Oral-b Sonic or Velocity would be a significant step up from that, at half the cost of the Sonicare, I'd be willing to take that step for now, and then would hopefully be able to graduate (financially anyway) to the Sonicare in the future. Considering the fact that I haven't had any dental coverage for the past 18 months, I'd like to do as much for my dental health as I can so that the next time I'm finally able to get back on a regular dental cleaning schedule it hopefully won't be too obvious that I've had to forego professional care. Hmmm... maybe I'll just bite the bullet & put one on layaway so it's not one big outlay of cash at once.

I'm also interested though in the connection between using the Sonicare and heart conditions. I have a mitral valve prolapse and was told that due to the risk of infection, I should take antibiotics before any oral surgery. Technically, I should also do so before a regular dental cleaning too, but I always forget to ask for a prescription beforehand.

My husband has mitral valve prolapse and it is essential that you take the antibiotics before a dental cleaning. I'm surprised your dentist would even clean your teeth without you taking them. Our dentist won't clean hubby's if he forgets to take the pills.

I have something called Mitral Valve Prolapse, which is a condition where one of the valves in the heart doesn't necessarily close tight but swishes back in a sort of backwashy way. Because of that, I'm at a much greater risk for bacterial heart infections. The Sonicare style toothbrushes can make your gums bleed very easily, and for people who have MVP or some other heart conditions, they're just too much of a risk. When I go to the dentist or have major surgery, or if I had a bad accident and was bleeding a lot, I have to down a ton of amoxicillan. Some studies are coming out now saying that I don't necessarily have to pre-medicate prior to the dentist anymore, but that depends a lot on your personal history with MVP, so we'll see

Oh sheesh...I have something similar. Heart murmur. Aeortic Regurgitation... I think it is called. Was told same thing, valve doesn't close all the way so I get backwash effect too. I was told I need antibiotic before dentist as well. Had no idea it wasn't a good idea to use Soniccare. I love mine!

I've been using my SonicCare for a while, and I just have to ask:

Do you ever get good enough with this toothbrush that you DON'T spatter the whole mirror?

For pete's sake... I've been trying to keep my lips mostly shut, et cetera, but I always make a big mess!

I've been using mine for 4 years, and I am mostly splatter-free (except when something distracts me and I accidentally pull the still-running toothbrush out of my mouth!) it gets better, promise.

In the mean time, you can always stand in the bathtub while brushing ;)

I use an Oral B dual action brush. As someone who was never taught at a young age to be diligent with her oral hygiene it has made a huge difference in my remembering to brush regularly. I also have a firefly tooth brush which I use as a timer. What can I say, there are times of hte month that my teeth and gums are more sensitive. And the firefly is just fun!

The other tool which has been a godsend for my oral health is the tooth pick flosser thingies. I keep them in my purse and will use them while I sit at a stop light! hey, at least I am now remembering to floss regularly!

Aortic Regurgitation is an example of a heart murmur. You should be fine though..... The concern is more with professional dental cleanings and definitely with more invasive dental procedures.

I just upgraded my electric toothbrush to the Sonicare Flexcare. I have periodontal disease that is complicated by a malaligned jaw which is giving my gums and bone a terrible beating, so this is a last ditch effort down a long road to save my gums and teeth,f::

I avoided the splatter mess at first by brushing in the shower too!! LOL

I love my sonicare, although daughter and BF refuse to get used to the vibration. My dental visits are EASY now. I wish I could convert them! They say that the vibration feels like nails on a chalkboard to them. Did anyone here have that experience and get used to it eventually?

I actually am so used to the vibration that regular toothbrushes feel funny to me now!
