    wow ok so..

am cutting charmeuse silk for a custom order, big 55 inch wide half circles for a dancer's future skirt..

and i'm playing with one large half circle in charmeuse silk

this would make a LOVELY dance veil..for single use..nice curve so theres no dead weight, its heavier than habotai so it has a more mature ripple to it..

might dye one or two and see what happens..anyone else tried this yet? the fabric is just lovely the way it ripples

am about to drop habotai like a hot rock

wheres Mieldance? did i spell that right? you tried crepe for veils eh?

    Re: wow ok so..

well dharma raised the price on habotai 5 mm to 3.25/yd
you can get 6mm silk from thai silks for ..oh i think its 2.75/yd if you have a wholesale acct with them (pretty easy to establish)

here's dharma prices on silk charmeuse
Silk Charmeuse - Crepe Back Silk Satin

i'm using the 55 inch wide 19mm silk..i want to bathe in it!!! its more expensive than habotai but my dye services would be the same if it was habotai or charmeuse so it would be about ohh roughly $14 difference between a 5mm habotai large hc and a 19mm charmeuse large hc

I MIGHT be able to get it cheaper overseas but after paying shipping for fed ex and customs it will probably be about the same, but they will be pre-sewn for me and thats a huge plus..

and WOOHOO fed ex just dropped off a box of pre-sewn charm skirts in 34inch length with halter tops just oozing and waiting for dyes..running outside :)

also my china supplier may be able to get the charmeuse in a 12 or 16mm charmeuse which might be a bit cheaper but its usually tough to find the wide fabric..i may have to shop for another supplier but thats no biggie :)

I absolutely love 19mm silk charmeuse!

I have never used it for a veil, though. One issue would be that there is a shiny side and a matte side. that could make for some very special effects if both sides show or alternate.

I think the other thing about 19mm charmeuse would be float factor. Better for skirts and 3/4 veils as opposed to regular ones. Although I do have one half circle made from heavy charmeuse. But because it is pretty heavily beaded along the outer edge, it is more an entrance veil than a performance veil.

But having said that, I also personally prefer 8mm silk for veils and 10 for skirts. . .

Frankly a slightly heavier veil would be great for me. Because of the tiiiiiny size of some Japanese venues a circular veil (in between your veil poi and large veil size) with slightly less float would make restaurant work here much easier.

    Re: wow ok so..

I need to amend my previous statement about dye services..I dyed one half circle of 19mm charm yesterday and it took more dye, naturally, I'm not worried about that but it was more work to 'manipulate' the dyes.. after i do a few of these will have a better idea

BUT this silk is a winner

possibly a 12 mm would work just as nice and be a bit cheaper ..experiments!!

I agree with Ozma that different venues require different veils; it might be harder to do some of the more "floaty" moves with the heavier veil. I have a 10mm 54" 3 yard habotai veil that is like waving concrete around...the float is the issue, I think.

But, yeah, it's like the 74% chocolate of veils, eh?

lol. yes, I made them out of crepe, but rectangles, for my students. They were GORGEOUS and moved beautifully, I thought.

Here is the vid, the veil bit is about 1min in.

You know if you wanted to make me a circular wine merkaba charmeuse I'd be all over it!!

okay, I guess I do know how to embed :P

(this performance was just four months into a beginner class, so they weren't doing all the fabulous, fancy stuff that more experienced dancers might with the veils, but hopefully this gives an idea of how they perform.)

Only four months? They did really really well! You should be proud! Very few flaws but really nothing that detracted from the performance. I'd give 'em kudos.
