    Reinforcing beads???

OK, I just bought my first lycra egyptian costume and I really like the look of it but I have to hem it up (I was going to tack it in a scalloped shape) to not step on the hem. (Unfortunately found that out by ripping out some of the bottom beading in it's first practice..cr.:) Some of the beads already are wanting to come loose as it looks like they are put on with cotton thread. So the questions are: 1. What material can I slip through the beads to reinforce them and 2. What kind of thread won't mar the lycra so that if I ever re-sell it, it could be taken back out???? Any help is appreciated. Annette

    Re: Reinforcing beads???

Can you show me a pic. So I can see the bottom hem.
I also hand sew anything with beads, sequins and crystals, I have control of what I'm working on.
I use carpet/button thread or if it is an odd color embroidery floss which any craft store would carry. Bring an anklet or accessory(so you can get correct color)Use a size 3/9 Quilting needles. with the floss(button/carpet thread works best) take it apart use a single strand and do a basic hem stitch.then put needle though bead and do hem stitch again.Very small stitches.
The needle shouldn't mar the fabric.
I hope it is what you meant. Good luck

I also run the thread through some beeswax to make it stronger, less likely to be cut by sharp bead edges.

I was wondering about this too - do you know of anything that can reinforce individual fringe strings, loaded with beads? I recently purchased an egyptian lycra costume and I want to make sure the tassels don't fly off/break when I'm dancing, but I really don't know what to do. I'm reasonably handy with a needle and thread; is re-stringing everything 4x over my only option?
    thanks!

    Re: Reinforcing beads???

So far, so good. I don't have the quilting needle and will need to look into that but I do have some beading needles that may do. I usually use upholstery or coat/jacket thread and have the beeswax so maybe I can get a jump start with that. Thank you all, Annette.
