just got hair extensions (sewn) in..sore!

i now have a mix of henna and deep burgundy, long wavy hair that falls right about where the small of my back starts

loooove the way it looks although it will take some playing with..

if anyone is considering the sewn in type of extensions and wants to ask questions you can email me direct ..

in a nutshell, the hairdresser is on Kona side of big island, i bought three long, thick double wefts of natural hair(remy) ..the hair was about $300. to have it installed was $225..it took about three hours to tie in the three wefts

she did one at the nape, one in the middle and one higher up..i didnt need hair thickness or volume but because my hair is so thick she used another weft to match my hair

we did a henna color similar to my henna on the top and middle and then a dark burgundy with red highlights underneath..i've always been conservative so this is really fun but now i'll have to go get some darker makeup (pics soon)

the tough part was the braiding, she had to make tiny braids and that kinda hurt, a bit of hair pulling there to get the braids tight. i'd never survive cornrows but i'm a pain wus.

it's heavier but that doesn't bother me. i can't see the wefts or where they are sewn in. it's quite a bit hotter with all this hair. i'm having trouble getting it in a ponytail because it's so thick. but it looks like mermaid hair so it's worth it. also i have a headache but was doing some reading and that is normal due to the added weight and i should adjust over the next week.

she was able to match my hair type with wavy extensions..my natural hair is layered and wavy so it all blends together. she calls it gypsy hair:)

anyways i had posted here before about getting them so wanted to leave feedback..she did mention they hold better with thick strong hair..but she was wearing some as well and she told me her hair is really thin

    ..g.:

Yes, definitely pics. I should give you my sis's number. She's on the Hilo side working as an LMP and at a B&B. If you like the laid-back hippy attitiude, you guys would get along. She's awesome! (and learning hula/tahitian dance)

Re: just got hair extensions (sewn) in..sore!

hi ladies, I'm going back to Kona today to get the bottom one re-done..it's a bit too long (i cant believe im saying that) and its super super thick..talked with Susan this morning and she is going to replace it with one that is a little bit shorter (right below bra strap) but still the same dark burgundy color..

so it won't be quite as long but she's going to give me one piece that is attached with combs for super long hair for photos and dancing

pics soon..its FUN but my head still hurts!! says two days and they should be better, sleeping was a .

with my hair Susan said about 3 to 4 months and they will need to be re-done..maybe sooner because my hair grows quickly...the hair was the expensive part..i dont really go to salons for fancy coloring or work so 225 for re-install every few months isnt too bad (dont tell my husband that tho)

more details soon i gotta drive 5 hours again today

Re: just got hair extensions (sewn) in..sore!

yes, they (were) human hair, the hair was gorgeous

it is now noon on thursday and i have had the three crowns of thorns removed. i just couldnt take it any more. mild discomfort for a couple of days would have been fine but i went to a stylist this morning and asked her to cut them out..she says my scalp is flaming red. i'm not very happy. well actually i'm free of the damn things so that's paradise in itself but i'm not happy with the whole experience.

i contacted the original stylist as soon as i got home the other day and told her i felt they were pulling a lot and that my head was so sensitive i was taking tylenol..brushing hair even carefully was excruciating..and come on, i've been thru boob surgery so i know pain

she asked for me to come back so she could switch out one of the extensions for a smaller one. after all the hair pulling i wasnt about to get in her seat again. the other stylists i talked to said it should not have hurt so much to have them installed.

i told her all of this and also said the long hair is pretty but it didnt blend well ith my top layers..she had not styled the layers at all. she offered to put some strands in using fusion. i dont want fusion. some stylists say it may damage hair. i have excellent hair (just wanted length) and dont' want to risk damaging it. so i was stuck with this clump of rats nest (nice color tho).

she kept saying the pain will pass, i was trying not to be a big baby about it but now after hearing what the stylist i saw today said about the scalp area being red and tender, i know i did the right thing by having them removed. and i wasnt about to drive three hours to the other side of the island for the first stylist to do it.

i think she sells really nice hair and i'll end up buying the hair and figuring out a way to sew in clips to make it a clip in , instead. but i dont know that she knew how to install them really well or maybe i was just a pain in the ass client but dang (rubs head) NOT worth it

if you have trouble with hair clips staying in and/or dont like the feel of ponytails or braids pulling dont do it..

am off to google ways to make my own clips out of these wefts

yikes! sorry to hear that. it is weird also that she told you the weave would last you 3-4 months. I'm sure you'll find a creative way to use up your wefts though.

You just need to buy some toupee clips and sew them on, simple as that.

Oh gosh wow, I'm sorry Jess that really sucks! Unfortunately there are people out there who will do this kind of stuff (working on somebody's hair without the knowledge or experience). I know one lady in fact. My sister's mother in law is working at a salon with no license and I hate to think of all the people who climb out of her chair with damaged hair. ~shutters~
At least you made a good decision about it. You're absolutely right, its not worth the pain! Thank God your scalp is still attached to your head!

yea i was trying to 'be nice' about it but my gut told me to stop being nice before i had no hair left. or pain.

toupee clips? hmmm that sounds easy and then i can remove them to henna my natural hair..that would be ideal

hey i was thinking earlier, some gals have trouble holding the clip ins in because their hair is thin, what about putting a row of bobby pins, horizonatal, and then anchoring the clips to those, would that work? or how about some tidy but not scalp removing cornrows, a few of them, that could be used to help anchor them in?

yeah bummer huh? i was a mermaid for a few days but ohhh right now my head is much happier without the crown!

I think it would work finethe clips would work fine, just needs something to grab ahold of. I know that's what they do for girls who wanted to wear a wedding veil but the hair wouldnt cooperate.

Re: just got hair extensions (sewn) in..sore!

    Hi Jesennia!

I'm practically an extension expert -unwittingly so. >.< Worn them since about 1993, when Remy hair was a LOT cheaper to buy. At that time - there was the latex glue in method w/wefts and the braid technique. Some people are allergic to the latex glues, more on this later.

I had fusion done to my hair about two years ago. I am still growing out some of the breakage from removal. It looked GREAT and was very hard to detect but it was expensive to maintain and shed like crazy. It also made my scalp sore for a few days.

After I removed the fusion, the stylist somehow talked me into braids as you had done. Same thing with me - my head HURT and was red. I had a migraine after a day or so from the tightness. I have really very fine hair - and when she braided it -I felt like it was more visible as the braids created a noticeable 'hump' which I didn't like. A good friend of mine wears braids all the time and though she acknowledges they are tight at first, she gets used to them. Sunday's hair is much coarser - and she is african american. She joked with me I had a wimpy scalp. lol

I have tried the clip ins, and they're OK, but what I do when I add them in is tease my hair in the area they are to go in so they stay better. Unfortunately, I have this uber fine soft hair and they can slip out. sigh

I've gone back to the age old method of gluing the weft hair in with the latex glue. I buy Remy/European hair- or close to it for this. Then for shows, I add a hair clip/ponytail (usually these are fake hair - got one that's a perfect match for $14.99 at Walgreens) to the top for volume if I feel I need it.

I brush my hair gently always and when I take the extension out, I remove them with Aussie Deeeep Three Minute Miracle Conditioner! That conditioner used on your real hair extensions also actually coats and imitates a cuticle state (which is desireable for any extensions so they do not look fake or older ones that have become frizzy). PLUS 3 Min Miracle is the best glue remover I know of! I am allergic/sensative to the other glue removers. They smell horrible and leave this weird residue in your hair which contributes to breakage. With 3 Minute Miracle the latex glue slides right off with a comb with very minimal if any natural hair with it!!!

I do my extensions myself. I only use the glue on the ends of the wefts, not the entire weft across (too much glue in the hair). My method isn't for everybody, but I thought I'd plug 3 Min Miracle as it is cheap and available everywhere. It's high maintenance, but I have it down after all these years. My real hair is long, but it's just fine and thin, so with these I add volume and some length (I LOVE the 24" hair ---weee!). They look great!

I agree, and for fine hair the clips my slip so just put a little bit of gel at the area of the clips, so they have no where to go.

Jess look into the Hairpolice pinch braid method for extensions Hairpolice - Best Minneapolis Hair Salon much less painful and better for you in the long run.

Sewn in extensions can cause bald spots and irritate the skin on your head to the point of infection.

I wore this type of extensions for over 3 years w/o any problems. Msg me if you have any questions.
