    Crushed Penne Ideas

Hi ladies, over the weekend I became infactuated with some gorgeous jewel tone colored crushe panne at the store where I work. Got enough to make a cape, few cholis, maybe another hipscarf, cover a bra, but what else could I do with it that is bellydance related?

I was thinking like an elementary school project. Spray paint a variety of pasta shapes different colors, drizzle glue and then glitter on them, and then glue them to a bra form!

Have an adult to help you with ventilating for the spray, and with the hot glue gun.

    Oh, I know. I've done it--made a glued-on pasta Christmas tree!

Panne makes nice beledi dresses, skirts, jazz pants, tie tops. I made a beledi dress out of cerise panne, fitted it with darting, circular drape sleeves. Then added silver-lined turquoise beading and turquoise and silver holographic paillettes on the sleeve edges, hem, leg slits, and beading along the neckline. Inexpensive, comfortable, and fun to wear.

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm a self-proclaimed fabric snob.

The fabric is pretty, but personally, I dislike sewing this material with a passion. If you are speaking of the 100% polyester 1-way stretch velvet that generally retails for under $10 per yard. When you cut it, it rolls up terribly. It also sheds off massive amounts of fuzz into the sewing machine, so make sure you blow out your machine with some canned air during your sewing projects.

2-way stretch velvet with decent lycra content doesn't seem to have any of these problems, but it generally runs $20 per yard.

its true, the fabric will roll up, but I've had success making a very pretty trumpet skirt out of an inexpensive rose-pink panne velvet. and for hand-sewing -- like covering a bra & belt -- it's really not bad at all.

So true! But when it's on sale for $2.99 (or even $2.50!) a yard at JoAnn or Hancock Fabrics and you need to make something for multiple members of a troupe, suddenly the rolling and shedding isn't so bad. ..g.:

I bought some of that too in the royal purple color. I'm working on a bra and skirt set. Couldn't beat the $2.99 a yard sale. I love the rich color. You could do what I'm doing, cover a bra and make a skirt to match.:cr:
