Thread: Car wash?

OK, I've seen skirts described as "car wash" style in not one but two threads today -- I've never heard this term before. Both look like the skirts are made of strips of fabric rather than a solid piece, so I guess this is what it means.

Is this a new trend? Where did the name come from?

It's not a new term - have you ever been through a drive-through automated car wash? Remember the whirling machines with the strips of fabric that scrub the car? That's where the term came from.

Car wash skirts have been popular in fashion (not necessarily bellydance fashion) since, I think, the 1920's & 30's. They're great for dancing -- think Charleston!

(eta: I'm guessing the term hasn't been around that long, though, they must've been called something else back in the day!)

I loved going at the carwash when I was a kid, my mother had to bring us with her or we would be upset...maybe I am just easily amused ...

Palmier - you aren't alone, I loved going through the carwash - it was so fun and kinda scary but comforting to be inside there with my mom. Busting out the powder blue Buick Regale for a car wash was the highlight of my week when I was a kid!
