costume color choices
i don't know if this is in the right section, but i guess the right people will take care of moving/deleting this thread if it isn't lol ^^
so yeah.
i'm pretty picky with the colors i wear. most days, it's just a black top, jeans, silver/black jewelry, and maybe a touch of color.
bellydance-wise, i'd like to explore other colors. but i have no idea which ones! the cold-tone colors have always appealed to me most, generally the dark ones. i'm in an especially purple/teal-y phase, which i find to be a pleasant change from dark blue.
but the thing is -- those kind of colors look great on girls with dark hair.
i'm dark blond. "dirty blond" i think it's called... plus my hair is pretty long so it's blond on the tips and somewhat darker at the roots. too light to pull off the real dark colors nicely and too dark to pull off the really flashy colors..
although i love dark purple and such, i'm not convinced it would look all that good on me. i'm trying to figure out what WOULD look good.
so the question is, what do you other dark-blond girls out there wear? basically, i'm looking for advice, opinions, and pics ^^
thanks in advance! :)

Re: costume color choices
I have the same coloring and find the dark jewel tones are most flattering on me, as is black. I also choose costumes in dark purple, navy, red, greys, wine, turquoise.

Re: costume color choices
definitely go with the jewels tones...
ruby - red, emerald - green, sapphire - blue, amethyst - purple
You'll get rich deep tones without being too dark.

Re: costume color choices
A lot oof it has to do with the undertones in your skin. If you are cool toned, doesn't matter if you are blond or anything else, you can wear jewel tones. While I am not a true fan of the 'seasons' fashion following, it has its uses.

Re: costume color choices
experiment w/a variety, this had led me to a costume addiction lol
if ur on stage, i would propose bright colors. i personally try and shy away from blacks or anything darker if i know i will be performing on stage
however if it's a night club or restaurant gig, something dark would look great as well ;)
i noticed we try and shy away from colors that we don't think look good on us depending on our undertones and complexion and whatnot but its a costume for a reason..u won't be wearing it out in the street, u'll be performing in it. :)

Re: costume color choices
yeah that's part of the reason i want a bedlah more than a full costume :) it's so much more versatile! so far i have a silver coin top/belt set, and that's so practical, it goes with just about ANything! :) but yeah, want something beaded and fringe-y ^^

Ma'Shuqa (Bay Area dancer and local costume rep for Audrena) says turquoise looks good on absolutely everyone.

Re: costume color choices
I like deep jewel tones; my skin is too pale (read blindingly white!) to pull off pastels.
really, just try stuff on and see how it looks. Even colors you normally wouldn't wear. You might find some shades that suprize you!

Re: costume color choices
I second Natira's post on Ma'Shuqa's recommendation of TURQUOISE. My coloring is similar to yours, and I also am drawn to the darker colors and wear a lot of black/neutral street clothes. Dark purple drains the color from my skin (what little color there is, lol). Any bright color, even red, has to be "just the right shade" of that color, or it will have the same draining effect.
I was never drawn to turquoise because I have never considered it an "exotic" color, but I put together a costume with some turquoise fabric of high quality crushed velvet (the crushed quality caused the color to appear variegated into several shades of turquoise light to dark), accented it with gold, and even I had to admit the color made my skin and face looked almost radiant, I got lots of compliments on the color. It is also a must for me (with my coloring) to use some sort of hair accessory that incorporates some of the costume's color and metallic accent.

Re: costume color choices
thanks for your opinion Devora!
what other colors do you wear?
ugh, and that lovely turquoise costume in the swap-meet... maybe all this is a sign ^^

I am in the same boat, ladies - pale skin, dark blonde hair, and it's amazing how we all gravitate towards the same colors - intense jewel tones! I guess what they say is true - subconsciously, we know what looks good on us. The psychology and biology of color is fascinating!
My one bit of advice would be to remember that a jewel-tone does not have to be "dark" to be intense. It just has to be rich and full and multi-dimensional, like the stones they're named after. I've found myself trying on a few intense/rich colors thinking I'd look awful (like turquoise) and finding out that they work well. Look for colors that make you think of a treasure chest or a richly decorated palace (just not a Louis XIV Versailles! lol!)
p.s: I just bought a ruby red from Meena Oasis and I positively adore it!

Re: costume color choices
oooh, tanith, pics pics pics! :)
abut the skin tone - i thought that it came with the hair color (kinda), but i'm not that pale. i tan quite easily and it keeps the color quite a while. on top of that hair color varies with sun -- so in fall i'm tan with lighter blond hair, and in the spring, pale-ish with somewhat darker hair.
kinda a pain to color coordinate (hence the black/white...)
so thankful for your answers girls! :)

Re: costume color choices
Hi there, did you buy the one Salima is selling on the Swap Meet? That is a gorgeous costume! To your question on other colors I wear, I do not perform much, so I have not invested in many colors - I like silver and black when my hair is lighter/platinum, and find gold almost always works, but the turquoise is my first successful foray into a non-neutral color with "pop." Actually, per the earlier (excellent) comment to think of these bright colors as jewels, I might categorize the shade of blue in my costume as a "blue topaz" rather than turquoise, since the velvet tends to reflect and refract the light and is brighter than a turquoise stone.

Re: costume color choices
Yeah Devora, i'm afraid i couldn't resist Salima's turquoise... heh ^^ probably a really bad move financially-wise, what with xmas and all coming along, but hey, i'm a happy girl ^^
gold i donno i don't like on me. think a girl's gotta have tan to dark skin to pull it off nicely, but that's my opinion ;)
i wonder why turquoise goes on anyone? what are the "characteristics" of that color that makes it look so great and not clash too violently with anything?
