Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
From my experience they do not adhere well to any fabric that stretches or has a nap. Plus it was a challenge finding the correct heat setting that would completely activate the adhesive yet avoid cracking the stones. Of course if you have access to one of the commercial heat presses that has a thermostat it might be easier.

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
i was advised by the local craft store owner not to use hot fix on lycra due to lack of a good bond. never tried it.
i use the e6000 cement. it stinks and takes 2 days to cure but will never come off. i've got stuff i glued 15 years ago with e6000 that are still holding strong.

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
Don't mean to hijack, but I've never tried the e6000 before.
Sabrinabellydancer, have you tried this on acrylic stones, and lame'?
I'm curious if it melts/bubbles into acrylic, and did it stick to lame?
:-)

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
I've heard horror stories about melting fabric with hot fix stones
so I've been sticking with glue or sew on.

Good to know. I think I'll look for the
e6000. I am assuming the craft store would have it?

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
I think I've seen it at Walmart?
I was just looking up the product info.
It said for 'most' plastics, so I guess I'll have to get it, and test it first.
I'm also going to test a clear adhesive I just bought at Joannes, but I don't think it'll be strong enough. I'll have to find the bottle and tell you what it is later on.

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
You can use a T-shirt press like this one:

See
Hobby Lite Heat Press
You can put a Teflon sheet over the fabric to protect it, exposing only the places you want to glue.
T-shirt presses aren't cheap. The above is $250 and a hobby version. But you can regulate the heat up to 400 degrees F.
Alternatively, you can take your project to a T-shirt shop and see if they would do it for you.

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
I tried taking garments to a t-shirt shop but they were quite hesitant to touch anything not cotton or a cotton blend. I had to sign a release of responsibility for any damages. Once I realized a teen-ager would be operating the heat press I opted to forget the idea. He was quite heavy-handed and did not seem concerned about the cotton t-shirts and hats, I feared my costume pieces would not survive the onslaught of carelessness. Plus some of the work he had completed was not aligned properly on the garments. Hopefully someone, somewhere will find a better resource.

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
This past summer I bought Kandi Kane Applicator Wand for Hot Fix Rhinestones, N/A, N/A | Dreamtime Creations and used Swarovski and Preciosa hot fix stones on my sherbet costume http://www.bhuz.com/index.php?cmd=/p...view/id_14831/. I really should post a close-up of the bra and belt so you can see the stones. The fabric on the bra and belt is not cotton. It's a polyester stretchy lace type fabric with panne underneath.

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
Just popped in to say I bought e6000 at Wally world today.
I'm going to glue some stones onto tissue lame' and run it through the wash.
I'll let you know in a few days how it held up. :-)

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
Yes, I am. I haven't used it on anything else so far, but I can see how you would want to start putting sparkly stones on everything - it's so easy! I didn't put it on anything that's going in the washing machine, so I wasn't concerned about that aspect. I don't know how the glue holds up over several years.

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
Hi, not a hot fix question per se, but from reading this thread, I am getting the idea that it is a more common practice than I realized to affix stones to bellydance costumes via glue (via E6000 perhaps).
Does this mean that for instance, if you purchase a costume on the Bhuz swap meet, it's not unusual to buy a costume where the stones have been glued on rather than sewn? If you bought a costume and found the jewels were glued on, would you feel cheated, or is it simply customary to make a point of mentioning whether the jewels/crystals/etc. are sewn or glued? It has always been my assumption that gluing something for your own costume use is a "quick and dirty" way of getting the job done that might ruin chances of selling the costume for a good price in the future. I would be glad to hear if I am wrong. (BTW, I costume for theater and am a big fan of E6000.) If this is a hijack, just ignore me and I apologize in advance.

Re: Hot Fix Rhinestones
No, good question. I think for me it would depend on how much I paid for a costume. If I paid $175 and got it with glued crystals I would be as upset as if I paid more.
I don't know though..... If I loved the design, I don't know.
I don't have enough experience with high end costumes to really say what designers do. I just sold a Marta the Legend and her big, huge crystals were sewn in.
