Color Combos: how can you tell?

I've decided to invest in some "upper level" costuming (ie, not made by me) and I'm stuck.

I'm going to be ordering some bedlah. The costume isn't made yet, so I can request the costume fabric and beading colors and I'm totally stuck. I tend to wear silver, so I know to ask for that... but I want color as well. And I want a few colors... not just, say, blue and silver.

Still, I know the colors I *Like*, but I'm struggling with deciding if these colors will go *together*

I also dont' want to to blatently copy another dancer's costume either... but I feel like that is the direction I'm heading.

Is there any sort of resource online that you know of for testing out colors or, at the very least, and awesome directory of bedlah that I can get inspired from? It's a HUGE decision and I'm probably overthinking it, but I do want it to be perfect.

You can look at a color wheel to get ideas of colors that are complementary or contrasting.

You could order a silver bedlah, a gold bedlah, and mix those with skirts/veils/accessories of any color for greatest flexibility.

go to a fabric store and request little strips of fabric. Or the paint section in a hardware shop- you can play mix and match all day long ;)

Another idea is to get the book "Color Me Beautiful" and look at the palettes it contains. It organizes colors into 4 categories - winter, spring, summer, and fall, and shows groupings of colors that go together in each of the four categories.

I don't necessarily agree 100% with all the advice in the book, but I do find its palettes useful as a starting point when I'm thinking about which colors to combine in a given project.

These are awesome ideas... I never even thought about paint or fabric swatches.

I've never heard of the "color me beautiful" book, but I will look into it

Oh My! I haven't heard that book mentioned in forever!

I second getting a silver or gold bra and belt them playing with different skirts!
