I guess I should feel honored...My costume just made it to the UBDC list on Oriental Dancer... I guess I should be thankful...any publicity is good publicity. With over 60 000 views to the thread it is definately going to "be seen" ...It is funny how one person or a few can just decide that their opinion is the right one. The only critisism that they have been able to offer so far is that the bra seems flat. ..c::,r:;

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Oh my! Oh well, look at it this way - you've arrived!
There used to be an ugly belly dance costume thread here on bhuz. It was pretty common for one person to post a costume claiming it was ugly and then for others to reply by saying that they LIKED it and here's why...
If the worst they can say is that the bra seems flat, at least that's not too terrible.

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Is it the white and blue one? I think the mannequin makes it look oddly shaped, really. That's a really teeny waisted mannequin!
I didn't like the brown paired with it much (I wouldn't say it's ugly, just not to my taste). The white skirt makes it much more of a winter goddess!

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
yes your design..a rather nice one actually...was defended so I reckon you can't really claim to be UGBD.
My beatiful Pharoanix dress appeared on a Tribe UGBD thread..shrug I loved it.beauty or otherwise is indeed in the eye of the beholder.
I am surprised your costume was lifted off another OD thread.

What?!
I love that costume and it keeps haunting me. That costume has a cool kind of fun vintage look. I like all your costumes.

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Yes...my mannequin isn't the greatest. I will have to try to find some models in the future...hard to do in my small community but obviously a necesity.
In defence of the brown skirt... I can't seem to photograph the true color. it looks good on darker skin (with a tan) between the 2 skirts...I definately do prefer the cream skirt myself...but again...beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I like to give options!

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Well, I think saying "they" is an exaggeration since one person posted it and the others have said they quite like it or don't mind it.
I don't think it belongs there either because it is well made and very tasteful. Sometimes it just comes down to personal opinions though, what can you do. Hope you get an answer to why she doesn't like it because I can certainly understand that it's a bit not fun.

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
They being the one that said that it was "busy" and that the bra looked flat.
It has been only 2 that have said or implied anything negative and unconstructive.
I am thankful for those who take the time to say something positive.
It is very difficult to stand up and say that you like something when others don't.
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder...I just don't think that there is a need for a thread like that one...It is in no way a positive contribution to this universe...but I guess i'm of the old school that "if you don't have anything nice to say.."

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Man, trust me, if I had the money, that'd be on my top list. I stare at it longingly constantly, and I like both skirts. If it were mine I'd probably were the brown more often than the white.

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Good point. It's not like costumes end up in a UBDC thread by popular vote. One person posted.
And (*cough*) that person is rather well known for having narrow views on a number of issues, in my experience. (and since she posted the link knowing full well that the costume designer was a forum member, I won't worry about whether my post here gets read by her).
Let's not overdramatize this. It's one person.

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
I am not a regular OD participant...I guess mainly because of that thread...
It is one person. BUT it is a very popular thread.
Regarding that thread... It's easy to make statements and have grand opinions when someone isn't there to make you justfy or explain your reasoning. With her knowing I am "on that forum" I am surprised that she would ...well....dare. I thought I would challenge her decision to nominate my costume.Last edited by invokethegoddess; 11-10-2008 at 06:11 PM.

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
I havent seen the costume- but I always use to look at that thread when there was one on bhuz. I think it is a fun thread and I saw lots of likable people get their costume put on there. I have not looked at threads like that in a long time, just out of being buzy- but I suspect at some point one of my costumes will make the list. I think it is just fine to have a costume on the thread. I am hoping for my moment :) I would see lots of creative ideas, some really great looking costumes, good dialog about what is good costuming and what is bad. I never thought really badly about any of the people. Now lots of people see your lovely self = so nice.
No need to be unhappy about it.Last edited by bellydancerinfo; 11-10-2008 at 09:07 PM. Reason: - i just went looking at that thread- to many pages- if anyones sees me there I would love to know!

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
hmph. One random jerk - I say ignore.
BUT - many famous people and costumes have made it to the UBDC thread. Seriously. Dina's costumes, Jillina's infamous snake costume - just off the top of my head. When you take a kick ass, well made costume (which yours are) to the UBDC thread, it's a compliment - you're couture now, darling!

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
So well known in fact that I knew who it was based only on *this* discussion, and I don't hang out on OD or Tribe.
Ignore the dis, enjoy the exposure. One UBDC mention isn't going to turn anyone off who already likes your style, and the more people see your work, the more opportunities you have to win fans. Of course it's not fun to see your design brought up in that context, but please don't sweat it too much.

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Thanks!
I do feel much better after this thread...
I'm glad that I stumbled upon it and was able to question it's place there. Still awaiting an answer on that...
I KNOW there are many more that do not deserve their spot there.
It's too bad that a few bad apples always seem to spoil the bunch. It's awful when you have a "cyber-reputation"

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
I think it is just for fun but I have seen several posted there that I have thought I be that looks OK when worn. Mannequins don't do a lot of things justice. What a pity I am in UK (and several decades too old) to model for you in return for massive discounts/free costume.
PS I said I quite like your costume because I didn't want to be shot down, but I like it more than that

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Not talking about yours in particular but I often think mannequins do a costume no favour and often look so different on the dancer.
I own up I like OD. I like the way discussions go on general matters and the politics
UGBD threads can make one uncomfortable but I think there is a place for them and that readers have to lways keep in mind that posters are posting opinions NOT facts and not be fearful to challenge the OP.
Remember Di's wedding dress..loved my some, hated by others, looked back on as a mistake, looked back on as a triumph!

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
really?! Are you sure? Ok, I admit it too, I love OD and that's where I hang out mostly so I get defensive
Just think it's odd to talk this way about a person on another board solely because she expressed her opinion, which is what we do all the time here. I think the UBDC thread is fun too. After all it's costumes, not people we are talking about. It's great when someone stands up for costumes they like too and there's a discussion.

Re: I suppose I should be honored...
Yes, really! If a person expresses similar views often enough -- as we all do, given that these are discussion boards -- then eventually some views may come to be associated with that person in some other people's minds. So-and-so likes belly-burley, so-and-so hates snakes, so-and-so only buys Bella costumes, so-and-so loves yoga, etc. If you read the names that go with the posts over a period of years, it's hard not to associate them, I think.
No need to be defensive about OD -- I'm not criticizing it in the least! I like it too, and would visit more regularly if there were more hours in the day. (I spend way too much time here already, reading if not posting.) Some of the people I admire most from here are active over there as well. In fact when I don't see them here for a while, I have to stop by OD just to see what they've been oop to....
