What is the best way to coat coins so they don't tarnish?
Hi,
I just bought some 20mm iron disks, already strung together with split rings.
(discontinued $1.00 yd @ Walmart, trim made by Wrights, came in Gold, Silver, Copper)
They tarnish really bad.
What is the best way to coat these so they don't tarnish, yet keep their shine?
Do you recommend nail polish (does it yellow)?
Or spray on lacquer (if so what brand)?
Last time I sprayed coins with a 'shiny' lacquer, I don't know if the can was misprinted or what, but I ruined the coins. I wanted a clear shiny coat, what I got was a satin finsh, and it made the coins look 'orange'.
Thank you for your time. :-)

Any advice?
Name brand recommendations, wether it be polish or paint, or shellac?
Does the yellowing show too bad?

Not shellac... did you know old-school shellac was made from bugs?
Look for a matte finish acrylic sealer. Go to your Michaels or Hobby Lobby (you might not have Hobby Lobby)... or any art store. Go to where the art supplies are. Ask the person for a matte acrylic sealer that they use on pencil drawings, etc.
It should coat your coins with a finish that won't discolor or even really shine at all. Be sure to spray both sides lightly, from a distance of about 12" or whatever it says on the can, maybe do two coats to make sure since they are iron. This should seal your coins from oxidation and protect whatever fabric you end up sewing them to.

Matte will not shine. If I wanted shine I would probably take the time to use clear nail polish. If you want bling and shine use glitter nail polish. (I did that on a few pendants. Add a bit of sparkle. Mine were not iron.)

You can get a gloss acrylic sealer, as well... If you want them super shiny.
