veil poi users: what size/shape of streamer?

I'm going to dye some silk for veil poi and am debating about size/shape of the streamers. Some people use 84x35 inch rectangles. Some people like a half circle shape. Some people use a narrower streamer. Some people attach a whole 108x45 veil.

What do you like and why? I'm really not sure where to start. And should the silk be hemmed, or will that spoil the "flow"? Thanks.

hi Tiger, most of the requests I get are for the 84/34 size because most of the dancers are just starting out and want something easier to work with. I'd say about 35-40% get the Little Wings size (smaller half circles) , they like the fact that if they don't use them for poi, they can use them for half circle veils as well.

Dharma sells the 84/34 size, they have rolled hem..I've found the quality to be just fine.

But inquiries for poi has dropped, not sure if due to the economy or maybe the trend is waning? Not sure but try not to get stuck with a bunch of white inventory :) I buy mine just on request now because the 84/34 is an odd size and wouldn't be too useful as a veil if I couldnt sell it in pairs as poi..but the other sizes it's safe to stock up on cuz they can be used for veils too

with that said I'm dyeing some veil fans pretty soon by request only :)

    have fun!

Jes, thanks so much for the info. I'm not planning on doing too many... veil poi has not really caught on too much in my area. I was kind of planning on hemming my own yardage for these to avoid a Dharma order as I seem to be unable to put in a SMALL order with them!

I love the look of your Little Wings. I hesitate to cut any myself due to the likelihood that I'd cut them wrong... and then there's that big curved hem, "bleah" even with a hem foot. And again, not a lot of demand for half circles in my area for some reason. If there were ever a double-veil workshop here I'd bit the bullet and sink bucks into a stack of Dharma's half circles and just run the risk of being stuck with them.

dharma's half circles aren't half circles i was very disappointed after buying one, it's one of the long rectangles with curved edges

they won't let you place an order for just a couple? do you want me to try?

i may have an old beat up little wing around here somewhere am happy to send to you ..so you can see the dimensions..g.:

I'm sure Dharma would let me order just a couple half "circles". And then I would add this color of dye, and that color of dye, and a bolt of 8mm habotai, and some of that lovely rayon velvet, and this shawl would make a great gift... ..g.:

Do not tempt me with the little wing! Get thee behind me, S(ilk)atan! But thanks so much for the offer.
