Belly button Piercing.... or no?
Who here dances with a belly button piercing? Im thinking of getting one. It was going to be a reward to myself for having lost the weight I wanted to loose and Ive finally hit my goal.
However, I want to know how many dancers have one and to hear your opinions on how it has (or hasnt) affected your dance.
Thanks in advance :)

I have one - a lot of the dancers in my area do. There has been no effect either way that I can tell, but I sure like my sparkly barbell, and I can color-coordinate my jewelry to my costumes if I want (though I normally wear one with topaz-colored stones, which is both sparkly and neutral on my skin tone.)

I've had one before I started dancing. I don't think it adds or detracts. I really love how it looks on me, even though I don't wear interesting jewelry (just a CBR with a blue stone bead in it)

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
the only warning I have is this: when dancing, try not to wear a fringy bar. Especially with a fringy bedlah. It tends to look as though your belly button is barfing. . .
I am also getting a navel piercing soon.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
this is my own opinion:
i don't like them. regardless if you're a bd'er or not.
i find them distracting in a bad way on bd'ers as well. i don't have a reason why but they just turn me off.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
If you wear any type belly button jewelry it might be wise to avoid long looped fringe on the center front of bras. It can be quite painful and it ruins the routine when you cannot stand upright.
I had mine pierced years ago but had to allow it to close. Mine was always tender and prone to infections. Probably due to the waistband of regular clothing. (I have 5 piercings in each ear without any problems. No-one can explain it. My PCP said it was probably due to friction from clothing, no other explanation made sense.) I think it's adorable but obviously it doesn't work for me.
Congrats on the weight loss. We would love to see pix of the shrinking Amber Moon.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
My only recommendation is to go to a very reputable piercer. Navel piercings can have terrible infections. I have also known 2 people wose bodies rejected the peircing and pushed it out. As long as you are safe - you should do what you're comfortable with. I do not have my navel piered, only my nose.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
Do it because you want to and don't worry about how it relates to your BD career cos there's no worthy pay-off there. As far as the practical aspect goes, just make sure that when you graduate to a "real" bellybutton piercing that it doesn't get caught on your costume... just be mindful of fringe all the way around. Have fun!

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
I've had mine for 10 years. I don't even realize it's there anymore. I used to go crazy color coordianting it to everything; now I just leave a neutral ring in an forget about it. I think they are cute, but I don't think they affect the dance one way or the other. Like pp's have said - I've had it so long I think my belly looks weird without it!

Just be aware if your body doesn't like piercings. My body rejected a navel peircing and now I have a scar, though you can get acrylic instead of metal.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
I have a friend, and a family member that got theirs done.
They were constantly infected.
One of them had to have plastic surgery to fill the hole.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
Nooo! I have one and no word of a lie it took 2 years to heal!! Huge pain in the butt! I have warned others about it and one did it anyway. Her body is in the process of rejecting the piercing. Dumbest piercing I ever got (and I've had a few). I kept my bellyring since I couldn't remove the jewelry as it was infected and the skin closes over infection. Once healed, I figured I suffered for it so kept it. Apparently it is one of the longest piercings to heal and 2 years is not that unusual. :(

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
I had it done three times because my body would push the pericing out the last time the guy peirced my muscle because i told him it kept comming out and i don't have much fat so he hooked the muscle. so then when i had my first son i got a embilical hernia and the mucle tore more. when he went in to fit it he said the was scaring and infection in there. so i do like them but i would probley not do it again .just make sure they do not go deep and stay away from swimming i think it takes 6 months to heal. i was a life guard so i had to be in the water evey day which did not help it.
I had my nose and ears but that is cartalige and it heals differnt then other body parts.

I got my piercing a year and a half ago and I love it! I enjoy changing my jewelry and knowing that my navel isn't bare!!! It can take a bit of time to heal and you have to be patient. I have had no problem with mine once it was fully healed!

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
You could always glue jewels in the naval, or where faux ones.
It cost big $$$ for the plastic surgeon to fill the whole, with tissue he took from another part of her body.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
they do pierce w/ metal but form the above post it seemed like the writer was suggesting she get pierced w/ acrylic.
the navel is one of the hardest places to have pierced (it rubs against your clothes, snags, has a small surface area) and also the most likely to reject; i used to date a piercer (i was his guinea pig while he was learning) and have seen far too many rejected navels to even entertain or support the though.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
I don't like the look of them personally. I think they look tacky and outdated.
11-30-2008 06:57 AM #23Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
I have had mine for almost five years and I love it! It hasn't affected my dancing at all and even when I'm not dancing it's fun to change it just like earrings. However, when I dance, I don't use a dangly because it tends to spin around and draw more attention to the jewelry itself instead of the enhancement it is supposed to be. I find that a single stone is the best for most appearances, unless you are looking to get funky.
Just remember - you have to have an "inny" to get it pierced anyway. And I cleansed it with a bacterial soap and no alchohol, and this was the first time I had a piercing that didn't get infected so it is definitely a better option while it is healing.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
I have had mine for about 6 years; I did not have any issues with it healing after the first few weeks. When the recommended Dial soap didn't seem to be warding off infection (and the tea tree oil hurt like heck) I would, once a day, lay on the floor and fill my belly button with peroxide and rotate the ring, sopping the peroxide and refilling until it didn't fizz anymore. I know there are varying opinions of peroxide use in staving infection, but this worked for me (and the friend who recommended it).
For a long time, I changed out the rings to match outfits but I really haven't been wearing anything in the hole for quite awhile now. Occasionally I put a ring in just to keep it open but it seems to have lost a bit of its allure for me. I rarely, if ever, wore a jewel while performing- I didn't want anything to distract from my sparkly costume. ..l;,

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
Clean it with Bactine every day and never plan on wearing anything around your waist for a long time. Yazeena talked me into it last year, and I like it. They did it while I exhaled, lying down - not a big deal at all...go for it :) No effect on dancing.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
While it worked for the above, most piercers do NOT reccomend you use products like soap, bactine, or hydrogen peroxide on a fresh piercing. Doing such strips away natural germ fighting/healing mechanisms. Rotating is also a bad idea as you risk the chance of pulling through new bacteria into the open wound and if you have crusties on the jewelery, when you pull it through it can tear up the inside of the wound.
Look for the following if you decide to get it done
Ask for: 316LVM ASTM F-138 standards compliant implant grade steel. Don't be fooled by shops offering "surgical" steel; this is an industry catch phrase that has no actual meaning or standards attached to it. A steel counter-top or a kitchen spoon could be referred to as "surgical" steel.
Ask for:Titanium implant grade 6AL4V ASTM F-136 titanium to ensure the utmost safety and biocompatibility requirements are met.
Ask for: Niobium
Elemental metal (Nb, atomic number 41) and is totally hypo-allergenic
While I may be against the navel, I'm not against SAFE piercings...do your homework and don't be afraid to shop around

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
I got mine done about 8 years ago. Got over trying to match colors with costumes also so now I just keep a bar bell in with clear rhinestone for some sparkle.
Mine healed in about 6 months, but was pretty painful at times because I kept forgetting it was there and would knock it around when putting on pants, catching things or hugging people.
Makes for interesting conversation at restaurants. Older patrons (usually big tippers) are particularly interested in it and always ask questions or make comments about the piercing. I make jokes about it and hope that the personal interaction gets me more tips;)
I've been lucky though, I have heard about them growing out or getting horribly infected so take good care of it!

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
My piercer did suggest I rotate the ring once a day when I was washing it with Dial (thus softening and/or washing away the crusties). Now that I think of it, I believe rotating has been suggested for all my piercings, this may vary from piercing artist to piercing artist though...perhaps the key being the rotation happens with the washing, not just whenever? I have not ever rotated a new piercing while it was dry- there has always been soap or peroxide.
I completely agree about shopping around~ check out the shop before setting your appointment, get recommendations if possible. Also, make sure they use a needle as opposed to a piercing gun- in my experience, the needle hurts much less and the piercing was cleaner.Last edited by maranajla; 12-01-2008 at 03:08 PM.

Re: Belly button Piercing.... or no?
,f:: if they use a piercing gun pack up your navel and run the heck out of there as fast as your possibly can

the needle has a tapered point which helps it to create a hole and then open it while a gun is just that, a gun; it doesn't give you the same clean hole and can cause more damage then intended.
