Modest Costuming
Hey Fellow Bhuzzers, I need your help. I want to find as many ideas and pictures of modest belly dancing outfits. The more variety the better. Essentially I am looking for costume examples of that don't show alot of leg, midriff , cleavage or shoulders. I am a fan of the Baladi dress, but I am looking for lots of examples. Thanks in advance!!!!!

Here's me in one:

To make it even more modest, you could replace the mesh with the same not-see-through fabric the rest of it is made from.

The skirt/top set is from SharifWear, I added the black body stocking and made the bra and belt.

Ghawazee coat + harem pants...

For more coverage, it could be paired with a peasant blouse instead of a coin bra.

Re: Modest Costuming
Here are a sequined/beaded velvet dress (side slits could be sewn closed) and a sequined galabeya that is completely covered, not sheer, and just skims the body. Both are from Egypt:

(Galabeya needs a home, actually.)

Re: Modest Costuming
is this to give examples for potential conservative gigs or a personal choice?
the reason i'm asking is all the excellent choices but one have a very ethnic look that more upscale gigs may find not elegant enuf....this may help with more examples........
now you can DEFINITELY do up a ghawazee coat in rich fabrics, like charmeuse (lined) and velvet with really great sparkly trim and beading and floaty/silky undergarments to bling it up, but some ethnic groups and upscale corps may STILL find it too 'ethnic/folky', so trying to come up with as many examples for you as possible

That's a great question and you're absolutely right to point this out, Ruta, but I could have sworn I saw two.

Re: Modest Costuming
It is actually for both. I belong to a conservative church and so if I ever had an opportunity to dance there, I would want it to be a modest costume. I also have an opportunity to choreograph for a high school dance department and I want their costumes to look good but fall into the schools dress code.

Re: Modest Costuming
Ah, now that I understand better the environment in which you would wear it, how about some of the dresses and blouse/skirt sets that are sold specifically for liturgical dance? For example, there are these sold at Discount Dance Supply: Discount Dance Supply . I think these could be really pretty if teamed with nice hip scarves.
Another option could be to go with a baladi dress from L. Rose Designs. Unfortunately, the photo on the web site doesn't show the high-necked option, which is the one I would suggest you consider. The page is here: L. Rose Designs - Catalog . The photo shows the deep belly-baring plunge version of the neckline, but it's possible to have the neckline cut high so that the bosom is completely covered. You could have this made in a sumptuous fabric such as velvet or even twilight velvet, and team it with a pretty sparkly hip scarf. It's possible to have the skirt cut like a trumpet skirt, and it's possible to have chiffon drapes on the sleeves. I just ordered an L Rose baladi dress for myself made of black velvet.

We have several on our site -
Belly dance in Union County and Charlotte North Carolina - Gallery
I am in the blue with pink highlights. I purchased it online without trying it on - ok, not the brightest ideas, but is so hard to find a dress, even at the local vendors. Anyway, it didn't come with the pink (lots of pink beading on it). I added it because the dress would have been WAY too revealing without it. The 2 lower cutout areas don't fall on a modest place on my body. I think it turned out great and looking like the pink was meant to be there.
