i've made rings going up the side of flair pants...and though it wasn't very easy- I was a novice when it came to sewing. I have more experience then.
I used stretch velvet for the pants....and lined each side with interfacing so it didn't stretch at the open seam. then i made the rings non stretch...
    what would you do?
I'm going for the non fitted- non flare pant style. More wide leg and funky. how wide is too wide before the openings in the front get covered up? so many questions!
    thanks in advance!

These are really cute. They remind me of Geisha Moth lace-ups, though the Geisha Moth ones have the laces up the sides instead of down the front.

If the hip was fitted, you could go quite wide in the legs before you 'lost' the opening in the front. You might consider putting a panel of contrasting fabric in to make the design feature more obvious. Even fleshtone mesh would be cool so you could be more nekkid!

These are my "funky pants" that I found at the Salvation Army. The cutouts are made from one continuous pleather piece stitched down the front of the pants. I placed a piece of paper under the cutouts for the close up photos. The last image is of the wrong side of the cutout panel.
