Yarn Falls: How do you make them work?

Alright, so after lusting after some pretty amazing (and out of my price range) yarn falls this summer, I figured out how to make them myself! Yay!

Only problem is, now I can't figure out how to wear the darn things.

The style I saw was yarn bits attached to an elastic pony tail holder... so that is what I emulated. I figured out how to dread the yarn and attach it and add all the bobbles... but I look super silly when I wear them in my hair.

My hair is past my shoulders and whenever I gather it into a bun (either two side buns or one large in the back) and then wrap the fall elastic around it, my hair ends up sticking through the falls like some weird blob

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this not a style for longer haired girls?

Hmmm, interesting question. I have long hair, but I don't wear these so I have no direct experience.

What if you left your hair in a pony tail or two small pontytails instead of putting it into a bun. Then the falls would blend with your own hair?

Not sure if you like flowers, but what I did was buy some fake flowers that have a barrett and a pin or elastic on the back...I attached the yarn falls to the elastic or pin and I clipped them in my hair. I love the way they turned out.

now that is cute. Both are good suggestions.

BUT.... I think the colors I want to wear (hot pink and orange for example) would look rather silly if mixed with my own hair.

    But, then again, maybe not.

The only way to know would be to try it out and see how it looks. You could also add some temporary color streaks to your own hair (think halloween spray in stuff) to make it look a little more coordinated.

Yup. I'll have to see when I get home from work.

I was always under the impression though, that you wore the falls to replace your own hair. But I guess you can really do whatever you want.

I think you certainly can use them as a replacement, but I always think of them as jewelry for your hair.

If your hair is sticking out, try buying a hairnet in your hair color (available at all drug stores) and wrapping that over each bun (they're meant for the whole head, but you can double double it back over itself to size it down for a bun). The errant hairs will all be kept down by it. To help, I cut a few loose yarn bits held together with a teeny tiny claw clip and I clip these in front of the bun so you can't really see the buns through the yarn (since the fall falls in back of the bun, leaving the front of the bun exposed).

I ordered some from Gi Gi's Originials. She is AWESOME! Anyway, she puts hers on a barrette. So . . . . there is no "poke through" of my real hair. They work really well. It looks like the took 2 handfuls of yarn and tied them to the barrette. Here is a link to some of hers so you can see. I had the same trouble with the elastic kind, but the barrette style work better for me.
