Hey all!
I've been MIA for awhile thanks to school and work, and my teacher moving away. This isn't belly dance related, but you guys are the best sewing resource I know!
In late February there is a charity Pirate's Ball I'm planning on attending, and this means I have to get a decent pirate costume made so I can enter the costume contest!
This is my inspiriation:
I already have a shirt, and I'm debating if I want to make (yet another) corset or use a black one I already have. I also have black and white striped bloomers I made several years ago, and brown boots, though I'm debating if I should get some black ones. (Money is the main factor, at the moment). The skirt is where I'm not sure what to do. I have a partially made maroonish skirt that would work, but is cut in panels, but I think a circle skirt would look better. If you look at the left edge of the skirt, you'll see it is made out of a pirate flag, and that is also a neat idea, but again, not sure if I really want that. I really think the skirt needs to be at least a red color, nearly everything else is black.
I don't want the skirt to be too bulky, so for the top skirt, so I'll either do a 3/4 circle with actual split, or a full circle and tucked up into a belt on the hip. For the underskirt, can't decide between white or offwhite, and I want it fuller so at least 1 1/4 circles, and split or not depending on the top skirt. It would also probably only go to mid calf so I wouldn't step on it.
Here is kinda what I think each option would look like. Keep in mind I am in no way an artist!!
What do you guys think?
Thanks!
Rachel

Re: How would you make this skirt?
to keep bulk down, how about a full circle under a half circle?

Re: How would you make this skirt?
the skirt on the original picture looks like this to me:
bottom (white) skirt: about 1 circle, but it's not gathered at the hip, it is trimmed in a way that it's shorter at one hip and gradually lengthens.
The top (black) skirt looks like it's maybe a half circle, but probably less, trimmed the same way.
The skirts don't seem to have a knot / bulk at the hips. Looks really cool!!

Re: How would you make this skirt?
Make two circle skirts out of inexpensive material (or get two broomstick circle skirts at good will). Pull up both skirts on one side and wrap a thick rubber band around the excess after adjusting to get it exactly where you want it. Take the skirt off. Cut the excess that is gathered the rubber band leaving the rubber band in place. Use a large medallion, brooch or other ornament to cover the rubber band and cut area.
If you don't want to cut, just tuck it in a belt. That is what a real pirate would have done.
