January Health and Fitness Thread 2009!

Woohoo! It's 2009. Now that we have a new year ahead I need support to stay on track. So far the Wii fit has kept me active and the weighing myself everyday on it (I only look at the BMI - not the weight) has kept me honest. Here's hoping that together we can keep one another on the track to a healthy body. ..l;,

I'm going to join in this month to help me in not eating nuts (which give me hives but I love them SO much) and to stay away from refined sugars.

I have the same reaction from tree nuts. I can eat peanuts since they are a legume... that's my only saving grace. The holidays are especially hard with nuts. I'm also allergic to watermelon which I LOVE and that is very hard in the summer. We'll work together towards a hive free 2009.

I think anyone that watches us perform will be immensely grateful too! ..l;,

I can eat pine nuts but not peanuts. Too bad they don't have the equivalent of pnut butter with pine nuts.

Well, there are worse things you could buy. Our theatre now sells White Castle Burgers (along with the hot dogs and sausages).

Hmmmm, I have some kind of hives/rash right now and can't figure out what it's from!!!

I've been really frustrated with having my great progress stopped by an injury, but I'm back on track. Here I go!

i'm going to go and have a fitness assessment done...i want to know where i am that way versus just using the scale all the time.

i really want to up my cardio fitness and work on my legs.

when i was in mexico i taught myself how to swim and i'm hoping to take a couple private lessons to make myself better.

all the best to everyone on their goals! xox

To those of you who dance restaraunt gigs, do you eat late at night after you're done dancing? I don't like to, but I find that I HAVE to because my energy is just GONE. I think a lot of it might have to do with dehydration.

My jan goals are to not put on any weight, since I'll be on vacation for a week and then it's my birthday so that means CAKE!

I have slacked off so bad over the holidays. When it comes to the 90 hour challenge, I not only fell off the wagon, I rolled underneath it and was run over by the wheels. ..l;,

Zumba starts up again on Tuesday, so I'm committing to doing that again every week, along with cardio at the YMCA every Sunday while my daughter's in Tae Kwon Do class. I got Body Motion: Modern Dance Workout from my Secret Habibi, and I want to incorporate that once a week as well.

I also need to be better about planning my meals and grocery shopping in advance for them. It's so easy to make bad decisions when you're in a hurry and just have to get you and the family fed ASAP.

yes i eat after i dance and again when i get home my husband says are you having you snack and then comming to bed. i guess i am a creature of habit and addiction my snack is usually ice cream maybe cookie.

I made the most awsome dark chocolate fudge.
i messured my self cause you never know when you might see a costume and you have know at all times if it will fit or not. well any why i have been practicing more and when i messure my lower hip was bigger by an inch 36 finally!!!!!!! so i was hoping that was muscle from working out but i think it was the peice of fudge after b/l/d and snack.
in take over out put. if you are using alot of energy you need to relace it . of couse not with fudge but eat something beacuse your body will eat muscle.
a really great book is the body for life ..g.:i did it once before i got pregant with my first son it is really worked and you change your eating habits and you get to have the cake once in while.

i used to work at a gym and life guard.
yes like baywatch, all belly dancers are stippers and all lifeguards look like pam anderson...l;,..l;,(LOL) just kidding !
but i really was a lifeguard since i was 15 so i was totally in to fitness. still am but i am going for a different shape now.
i wanted to say to drink a lot of water and when you get hungry drink a big glass of water first. one it might be dehidration and two it fills your stomach so you are not as hugry or eat an apple before your meal it has a lot of fiber and fill a voide before fill it with other food.
not an allpe each time cause you might spend you life in the bathroom
    Happy New year.

I weighed myself today and I did not gain anything over the holidays :). My goal for 2009 is to continue to honor my health and my body without being able to go to yoga class anymore: I will have to become more self-guided. And I admit I'm hoping that I continue to see visible results: I would love for my stomach to be flat even from side view.

I don't like to eat a big meal before I dance, but I HAVE to eat something... So I'll have a small something with protein to hold me over (a fave is a shake with chocolate whey protein powder, tsp peanut butter, half banana, dash of milk, ice), and then afterwards a salad or a half portion of a meal. When I'm being good, anyway ;). I also try to drink water or something when I'm getting ready (which means I'll need to use the restroom as soon as I'm fully in costume, but at least I'm hydrated).

For the new year, I'm resetting my ticker for my long-term goal. It's kind of daunting, but I don't care if it takes me all year to get there...

Yeah here is to managing to become and many a Hive free 2009.

What do you girls do for coverups when you have a hives outbreak? I find long sleeves and manmade fibre make me to hot and worsen the hives and I am at a loss what to try

I'm resetting my ticker as well. Gained a few pounds during the holidays and want to shed them again. My focus for this month: more water, more tea, less wine and coffee.

Re: January Health and Fitness Thread 2009!

As far as January goes, I need to return to my healthier eating ways pre-December or November (can't remember when I pushed salads away from the table). I gained a few pounds and it's not attractive! I hate eating veggies, makes my jaw hurt. But it's back to the grazing ways that keep me from blowing up.

I'm also noticing that despite staying on the wagon, I am not doing as much cardio anymore. That's one thing about dancing...You get to a point where you know the move so you stop short from making your heart race or breaking a real sweat. I'd like to add more strength training and cardio...but I have to be really careful with my knees because they're hurting a lot lately. Don't know what's the deal. Oh, and I apparently have to work more on my balance, too.

I wear cotton or other natural fibers. I also increase water intake to flush my system, take baths with dried milk and honey and sometimes oatmeal. Other than that, I just have to wait things out. You can always try an anti-histamine like benadryl too. The topical won't do much but the oral medication works great. Just makes me really sleepy.

Have you used this organizer before: Amy Knapp's Family Organizer, Organizers

I'm on my second one now and love it. There are menu lists for each day of the week as well as a tear-out grocery list. It's made meal planning much easier for me.

Another thought (though you might already do this) is to pick a day of the week to make a huge batch of something, then freeze it to use throughout the week.

I have recently located the book that came with my Vita-Mix. So I'm going to start using it! Supposedly it can grind flour, cook soup, make ice cream, juice whole fruits (I think I'll take the stones out of the plums all the same). Any of you ladies have experience with one of these dynamo machines?

And I'm going to dust off all the videos and my music mixes and get down to work, drink more water and get all that sugar and gluten out of my life again now that the holidays are over!

My roommates and I bought a desk calendar that we hung up in our dining room. Whenever we go to the gym and do a good workout, we get to color in our third of the date with our color. I'm hoping it will motivate me to actually go, since there will be evidence that I'm slacking if I don't.

Well, I have revamped my ticker with my year end goal as well. The Wii fit graphs my BMI and Weight with short term goals for me. I just had a lovely 3 pound gain in one day from getting my period (sorry guys if that's TMI). I hope it goes away next week. I am still doing 30-60 minutes of aerobics and strength training everyday now for 10 days. I hope the Wii fit keeps me going. I can add my dance practice into the program as well which is nice. Here's hoping that poor little snail gets somewhere in 2009. ..l;,

Zumba is a high energy, high-impact aerobic workout that incorporates moves from different kinds of dance - latin, mostly, but there's some hip-hop, african, BD and jazz movements too. There is no breakdown of movements, so it's no place to learn technique; the point is to get your heart rate up and keep it up, period. Generally speaking, they just throw the combinations at you and you just try to follow along as best you can.

I like the high energy - it feels more like I'm dancing than working out. I love the music my instructor uses (quite a bit of hip-hop and modern radio hits). I rarely if ever look at the clock, and the hour's usually gone before I know it. Finally, I like that I know I'm getting a killer workout; I leave soaked with sweat and practically crawling out the door. My instructor says that if you do Zumba with a high level of intensity, you can burn 700 calories an hour or more.

There's some additional opinions and experiences here:

Holy crap! Your instructor must really whip your a$$. My goodness, I don't know if I could keep up with something like this. I used to go to this one BD instructor who claimed you could burn up to 500 calories in her one-hour sessions. I stopped laughing once she started the warm up...and I didn't go back because...because...I'm a wimp. Yes, I am.

Wow--thanks for the explanation--I'm going this Sunday and giving it a try. I'll post about my experience if I can get my fingers to work after such an intense workout. ..l;,
