Do I just order some chiffon online and stitch it in?

It depends how full you want it.
The shape you need to cut is an 1/8, 1/4, or 1/2 circle.
1/4 or 1/2 will work better as the sides are on the grain of the fabric.
I would also advise you to cut it slightly longer than you need, then trim it after it has hung, because it will likely be a bit uneven.

I almost always set these in by hand. That sounds crazy I know. But if you are cutting on the bias it can hang funny once you machine stitch it. All the skirts I have like this from Egypt are hand sewn so I just took my cue from them.

Are you making a modesty panel? A gored skirt?

what direction do the chiffon's 'fibers' have to be compared to the skirt edge? perpendicular? at 45*?

The shape most people like to use is either a quarter circle or a half circle, depending on how much fulness you want the chiffon to have. Cut the radius the length you want + enough to allow for seam allowance at the top of the slit + hem. I'd cut it a little longer than this measurement, maybe half an inch longer, and then trim off the excess after sewing it in, before hemming.

I just got a new black skirt and it's a little *leggy* for me...

also think about putting in few rungs of fabric/bling (like a ladder) at the top fo the slit if you just need t a little lower.

Why order online? Dongdaemun has a whole building full of craft supplies including 2 (3?) floors dedicated just to fabric. I'm sure you can find something to match. To get there go out exit 9 (I think - it's a blue line exit) of Dongdaemun Station. There's a huge car park in front of the building. You can't miss it.

I also need to create a modesty panel for a skirt with a high slit placed front and center--I'm thinking of just using a portion of the sequinned veil that came with the costume, since I'm not going to use it for veilwork and it already has nice finished edges (me + hemming chiffon = tragedy). Does this seem like a reasonable idea to people?

What I do in these instances is just get a rectangular piece of fabric and gather on end and stitch it to the top a few inches on either side of the slit. Then there is still some leg, but it's not up to "there".

so what if you want to put gords in to a straight skirt? do you still round the triangle or keep it straight?
